Her dark brown hair shone against the early morning sun, creating a halo against her crown.
I hadn't gone to sleep all night, I was amazed that Abbie was back bet, yet I was terrified that she would disappear. Weeks of tension, worry and anger had been spent trying to get her back to safety and now I had her.
I spent most of the night staring at her bump. Something that we had both made without intention, but I felt so protective of it already. This child was going to be treasured and treated like a prince or princess. Part of me was terrified to have this child, what if I ended up just like my dad?
A small lump appeared at the front of her bump, and I stilled. Was something like that meant to happen? Abbie's brow furrows and her eyes lazily opened. She took a moment to gather her surroundings and gauge what was happening. A small delicate hand was placed over her stomach, and she slowly rubbed it.
"They're kicking." She softly says.
"What?"
"The baby is kicking."
Abbie's eye's lit up, warmth and pride covering her features. Her small delicate hand grabs my broken calloused hand and places it over her bump. I hadn't dared touch it yet, I was still coming to terms that my baby was still alive.
"They won't harm you." Abbie chuckles, sensing my hesitation.
My hand is gently placed over her bump and a small kick can be felt.
Awe couldn't begin to explain what I was feeling. Throughout my life I had missed out on so much, my mother's pregnancy being one of them. This was the happiest I had seen Abbie since I had captured her all those months ago, who knew something so small and precious could change everything?
"I can't believe this," I whisper to myself, stroking my hand over her soft skin.
"It's amazing, isn't it? Having such a small being growing inside of me."
Emotions were bombarding me in all different directions. I wasn't sure how to feel a lot of the time but now that I was here with Abbie, I wasn't sure whether to laugh, jump with joy or cry.
"I'm struggling to believe it," I respond.
The loud ring of my phone breaks the moment and I reluctantly remove my hand to answer the call.
"When are you coming for your check-up? You said you would be here an hour ago!" Doc grunts over the phone.
My brow creases and I look at the time. It was eleven twenty, I should have been there an hour ago.
"Shit, I'm sorry. Abbie had a rough night."
"What was wrong with her?" Alarm coats his voice.
"Nightmares."
"Okay. Just get her in as soon as possible, but don't stress her out."
"Sure."
I hang up the phone and bring my hand back to Abbie's stomach.
"You talk about me as if I am a child," Abbie smirks, placing her hand over mine.
"I have not taken care of anyone properly before, let alone myself. It's going to take a while for me to understand what I am doing."
"I'm only joking, don't take it too much to heart. You've done a great job of taking care of me so far."
"Speaking of taking care of you, we need to get you checked out." I scoop my arms underneath her.
"I'm fine, I don't need checking over."
"Abbie, you and our unborn baby have been through a lot the past few weeks. You don't have a choice in the matter."
