My eyes felt heavy as I tried to open them, the morning sun felt like an intrusion. Warmth surrounded me like a blanket, pulling a small smile from my lips. A strong arm wrapped around my stomach and pulled me closer, flushing me to their body causing a startled shriek to come out of my lips.
"You need to be more aware of your surroundings," Duke states, inhaling my scent.
A steel-hard rod dug into my back, evidence of Duke's morning wood. A chuckle leaves my chest.
"It's not my fault I forgot you were in my bed." I sleepily defend.
Shutting my eyes, I try to will myself back to sleep. Even though I wasn't awake for very long in the night, it had taken a toll on me.
"You seriously can't be that tired." Duke exaggerates, swinging me over his body so I straddled his hips.
"Shouldn't you be at work by now?" I question, slowly grinding myself against him.
Duke gazes around the room. "Is there not a clock in this room?"
"No."
"Fuck, I didn't realize. Why didn't you say anything?" He scolds.
"I don't know." Shrugging it off.
His hand comes up and cups my cheek. "You should have told me; I would have got you one."
"It's not a big deal, I'm used to fending for myself."
A dark expression takes over his face. "You shouldn't be."
Taking a deep breath, I prepare to spill a story nobody else knows about.
"My father kicked me out when I was 17," I admit.
Duke's hands on my hips tighten, his body shakes with anger. "Why?"
Abbie – Age 17:
"I don't see why we have to leave so early!" I complain, slamming the car door.
"Because it's your dad and I's wedding anniversary." She calmly replies. "I only picked you up thirty minutes early from your friend's house, that's later than when I was meant to get you."
I cross my arms in a huff. "It's not good enough."
My mum pinches the bridge of her nose and scrunches her eyes. "Please don't argue about this right now."
"Then you shouldn't have picked me up early. I could have walked home."
"We've gone over this before. Both me and your dad do not feel comfortable having you walk around at this hour by yourself."
"I bet you would both jump for joy if I disappeared." I scowl.
"Don't you dare say something like that ever again!" My mum screams.
"Well, maybe you should have let me stay at Sara's."
"Abigail Stephenson, drop it now!" She warns.
"I don't see why I should drop it, you always told me to stand up for what I believe in."
"There's a time and place for that and it's not now."
"I could have stayed over her house, to be honest." I continue.
"Abigail for the love of god please don't ruin our evening."
My mum had a tight knuckle grip on the steering wheel. My comments had got to her, but she was trying not to show it.
"It's not our evening, it's yours and dad. I'm just going to be home by myself seeing as Mason doesn't live with us anymore."
