"It doesn't make any fucking sense!" I roar, smashing the whiskey glass against the wall. The glass explodes into pieces, leaving a cloud of fine dust all over the floor.
"Duke, it's only been one week." Ryder tries to talk some sense into me.
"One week of no contact. This is ridiculous!"
"He's doing this to make you sweat, drive you crazy. He wants you to go and find him on a rampage and fall right into his trap."
"If it makes Abbie safe then so be it." I grab my leather jacket off the chair and make my way to the door.
"No." Ryder intervenes, standing in front of the doorway.
"Out my way, Ryder."
"You're not thinking straight. I won't let you go out like that."
"Out. My. Way."
"I will lock you in this room."
"You lock me in this room, and you will be a dead man walking."
"You're not listening to me, Duke. Pavel will contact us at some point, he's making us wait for a reason. He wants you to go crazy!"
Silence comes between us, and I start to stare him down. I refused to stop meeting his gaze until he let me leave. Who gave a shit that I could die if I went parading around the town trying to find Pavel and Abbie. My anger was boiling over the edge, and I needed some sort of output for it soon.
The shrill of my phone breaks through the silence and I know exactly who it could be. It was like Pavel was listening in on our conversations, waiting for me to go stir crazy.
"Do you want me to answer it, I can be more reasonable." Ryder tries to reason with me.
"No." I snap, already reaching for the phone.
"Pavel." I curtly speak, not bothering to check the caller ID.
"Duke!" A voice screams back over the line.
It wasn't Pavel at all.
It was Abbie.
Fuck.
Knowing Pavel and the sick fuck he is, the phone was on speaker, and he was waiting for my reaction. He wanted me to admit I had feelings for Abbie and was desperate to get her back. No matter what it took.
I didn't have feelings for her though.
Surely not?
"Abbie. I will get you out of there I promise." Trying to keep my cool and respond as honestly as possible.
"I'm sorry Duke." She sobs over the line, making my heart break into two. She didn't deserve this.
"It's not your fault Abbie. I promise when I come for you I will rip that fucker to shreds and he will never see the light of day again."
"How enlightening of you Duke. You always were a heroic people pleaser." Pavel takes over the line.
"She has nothing to do with my life! Leave her out of this!"
"She may not be part of your life anymore, but her brother has more than enough ties to her for me to use as leverage."
"What do you want?" I growl.
"Maybe I don't want anything. Maybe I want to keep her and your unb0rn child."
"You wouldn't dare!" I seethe.
I could hear the slight cracks of my phone through the iron grip I was holding it in. If Pavel said much more I would end up cracking it into two. Then all my possible ways of communicating with Pavel and the chances of getting Abbie back were extremely slim. I had to force myself to remain calm to help my situation.
