"We shouldn't be coming back here."

"It's fine Duke, I need to do this."

It had officially been a month since Eva was born and since getting engaged. Duke and I were adjusting to parent life, some in more areas than others. Watching Duke obsess and pander to Eva made my heart grow more every day. He was growing to be an amazing father, even if he struggled to see it.

"This place is connected to bad memories." He growls, turning the corner a little too sharply.

"I lived here for six months; you were only there for a day." I raise my eyebrows at him.

"Pavel kidnapped you here."

"Stop trying to convince me to turn around. It's not happening." I grab his leg, stroking it gently. "Anyway, I need to clear some of my stuff out of the house."

"You've got clothes at home."

"Duke." I snap. "Stop. It."

He sighs slowly, "I don't want you coming back here."

"It's not a decision for you to make. Just do this for me please."

"We're here anyway."

The diner greeted me as Duke pulled into the first available parking spot. I could see Ari greeting an elderly couple, notebook in hand. Excitement and nerves bubbled inside of me thinking about seeing her again.

I grabbed a babbling Eva and walked into the diner, Duke trailing behind me.

It still looked the same as before. Nothing out of place or moved.

"Holy fuck."

I look over to the other side of the diner to see Ari. Her face was in complete shock.

"Hi." I nervously greet her.

"Oh my god." She runs over to me, engulfing us both in a big hug. "Where have you been. What happened?"

"I've got a lot to explain, do you want to go out the back?"

...

"So, where did you go?" Ari asks, hanging her apron up.

I sigh deeply, I needed to tell the truth to someone, or I would go crazy. "I was taken."

Ari's face snaps in my direction. "By whom?" Her head tries to subtly jolt in Duke's direction. Trying to accuse him of kidnapping. It wasn't far off from the truth, but he wasn't the one to take me the most recent time.

"No, not Duke. The man who turned up at the diner asking for my whereabouts all those months ago."

"So who's big boy over there then?" She eyes him down like a meal. Anger and jealousy pang in my chest.

"That is my fiancé Duke, the father of my child."

"Shit." She astonishes. "The one you were always talking about. I can see why you were now."

I could feel my cheeks heat up with embarrassment. Duke gives me a knowing smirk.

"Yeah. This is Eva." I push Eva further up into my arms, desperate to change the subject.

"Oh Abbie, she's gorgeous." Ari coos, making grabby hands.

I pass Eva over, admiring the way Ari naturally starts to pander to the baby. "I came back because I had something important to ask you."

Ari stops her sweet-talking to face me again. "What's that?"

"Eva still needs a godmother. Is the answer still yes from all those months ago?"

"Of course!" She beams. "I would love nothing more."

"I was wondering why Ariana was screaming in the middle of my diner." Mary clucks. "It's nice to see you again Abigail and baby."

"She's called Eva." Ari smiles.

"A gorgeous name for a gorgeous baby. Congratulations Abigail."

"She must be drunk." Ari mouths, causing me to giggle.

"As much as we would all love to sit and admire your baby, there is a diner to run. You're more than welcome to visit any time."

"Thank you, Mary. It's good to see you again." I smile, taking Eva off Ari and making my way to the door.

"You worked with some weird people." Duke comments, buckling himself in.

"I'm lucky to have worked with such amazing people."

"Mary sounded like a bucket of fun."

"Duke, just shush." I giggle.

"Did you work somewhere that was only a walk around the block out of spite?" Duke cocks his brows, pulling into the driveway of the old house.

The house looked unkept, weeds and moss littered all over the garden, creating mess everywhere. My red Mercedes stood askew in the driveway; left in the exact place I had dumped it all those months ago.

"I did use the car," I admit. "I used it every chance I got."

"It doesn't look used."

"Did you expect me to not take care of it?"

"I'm impressed." He smirks.

I stifle a chuckle and get out of the car heading straight for the door to unlock it.

"Why is there no alarm set?" Duke growls.

"Because I was being taken by Pavel, I didn't exactly have time to politely ask to set a damn alarm!"

"So the door has been unlocked the entire time?"

"No, I just kept a spare key under the doormat."

"Fucking hell, Abbie." He groans, touching his forehead with Eva's. "Your mom is insane Eva."

Men are so dramatic.
