Nerves settled like nettles in the pit of my stomach when the door to the safe room closed. My phone felt heavy in my hand as I gazed down at it. It had been months since I last used it. I doubt anyone tried to contact me apart from Mason, seeing as I was supposed to meet him back in my car all those months ago.
Trying to distract myself, I sifted through all my old messages to see if anyone had tried to maintain contact. To my surprise, a string of messages had come through from Mason the evening I got caught stealing the money.
Abbie, where are you?
Abbie, this isn't funny.
I didn't end up going into the building I'm sorry.
You're worrying me now. What are you doing?
I'm going to leave now. I'll see you at home.
Where are you?
A small amount of warmth bloomed in my chest knowing that Mason did care about me a small bit. No other messages had come from him though, I wasn't sure why. If he was so concerned about my wellbeing, he would have done more to find me.
The only other messages on my phone were from Andrea who works in the diner. Asking if I was okay and safe. It had been sent a couple of days after Duke took me. I assumed he had sorted everything out by then. Scenarios swirled in my mind, wanting to know how it was handled. Surely they would question my sudden disappearance. It was extremely rare that I missed a day of work, I would turn up even in illness. That wasn't my brightest idea as some customers would catch my illness, getting me in extensive trouble.
Heeding Duke's warning, I found his contact and sent him a message. He was in a state when I left, and I didn't fancy agitating the beast within him. I kept it short and sweet but also displaying my annoyance at how he left.
'Asshole'
By the time the next half an hour passed, I had got no reply from Duke. Either he was too busy sorting out the problem or I was acting like too much of a child. I think the latter was more accurate.
I hoped that it wouldn't be too long before Duke came back, there was little to nothing to do in this safe room and boredom was striking very quickly. I picked up my phone again, scrolling through all the idle, time-wasting games I liked to play. To my dismay, they were all gone. Blocked by a password set by Duke. It completely baffled me that Duke could assume a mobile game could cause contact with the outside world. All of them could run without Wi-Fi.
Instead of insulting Duke again, I decided to attempt to strike up a conversation.
'You could have at least kept the damn games on my phone!' Was the best I could come up with.
Not even minutes later my phone pinged, making me jump out of my skin. It had been so long since my phone was glued to my side that I forgot about messages abruptly coming through. I already knew who the reply was from, only one contact on my phone was not censored. Duke.
'No time for that.' The message said.
I knew he was lying. Once I was thrown on the bed and given a very stern warning look to stay in one place, Duke spent roughly ten minutes sorting out blocking everything he deemed necessary on my phone. He could have saved himself a great amount of time leaving the games alone and not thoroughly going through and blocking them all!
Too frustrated to reply, I lay back on the bed and tried to rest my head. It was currently working over one hundred miles an hour and couldn't possibly slow down. Mentally, I felt exhausted, but my body was wide awake, desperate for some sort of exercise or action. I craved wanting to climb a tree, pretending that I was in my own secluded fortress where nobody could get to me. That had to be left in the past, along with my five-year-old self. Bigger problems were at stake.
