"He hurt me, Abbie." Rachel sobs loudly. "And he will do the same to you."
"What do you mean?"
Part of me wanted to reach out and comfort Rachael, but she was just out of reach. Why couldn't I get to her?
"Pavel won't want me anymore when you give birth. His entire focus will be on his new heir, if you have a boy. I won't be needed anymore."
"He won't have my child."
I covered my hands over my bump protectively. Pavel was not having my child and I would do everything possible to stop it from happening.
"You can't stop him. When he wants something, he will have it." Tears continue to silently fall down her face. "I've never seen someone with such an obsession. You're not safe either."
"What do you mean, I'm not safe."
Something about the way Rachael was talking to me was unsettling. Her words felt like complex riddles that I could not physically wrap my head around.
"Pavel is obsessed with you, when he's done with me, you will take over as his wife."
"No!" I yell, my hands stroking over my bump in erratic movements.
"You can't stop him. Nobody can."
Rachael's sobs start all over again, pleading for mercy. I couldn't help but sit there in awe of what news had been broken. I refused to let Pavel have me or my child.
Hurried footsteps are heard coming down the stairs and Rachael's face pales further.
"He's coming." She frantically whispers.
I try to reach for her again, but I still can't reach her. My body seems to be rooted on the spot and my arms cannot stretch to their usual length. Why is this happening?
"You'll be okay." I attempt to reassure. "We'll both be okay."
Rachael smiles between her tears. "I'm thankful to have met you."
"Don't say that. Please."
The door swings open, bashing against the wall violently and Pavel's suit-clad figure appears in the doorway.
"What are you ladies talking about?" His thick Russian accent enquires.
We both stay silent, worried that anything we say could be used against us.
"Very well." He sighs, reaching into his breast pocket.
I furrow my brow, trying to think of what could be in a breast pocket. Nothing of interest came to mind.
I watch closely as he starts to walk towards Rachael. His hand was still in his pocket.
Worry starts to tug at my chest like an incessant child. Rachael was right, we're not going to be okay. My eyes warily left Pavel and scanned over to Rachael, her face had paled even further, and her breathing was becoming shallower. She knew something I didn't.
Pavel's hand eventually leaves his pocket, a gun present in his grip. My heart rate accelerated quickly, and I could feel my face paling too.
The muzzle of the gun presses firmly against Rachael's temple. The cool metal made her flinch in fear. "What were you talking about?"
I was too stunned to speak, and my body still wouldn't move to help.
"None of your business," Rachael says with no confidence at all.
