Heavy feet are dragged in the halls made of metal cages and cement flooring, the ruckus of apprehended criminals bustling from both his sides and above as he's pushed and tugged towards his new home. His head is lowered, though not out of shame.

The rumors have gotten to them already-- the obnoxiously loud murmurs below those who have no fear of shouting it for the new inmate to hear; "this guy abused his whole family and almost pushed his youngest boy to suicide!". It drives them wild with fury and disgust, the sound of metal prison gates rattling louder with it.

"The wife had to be given up to a mental hospital 'cuz of him!" One shouted.
"The oldest son turned into a villainous bastard 'cuz of him!" Another followed up.

"The oldest daughter's got severe depression and anxiety!"
"--'cuz of him too!?"
"Of course it's all 'cuz of this bastard!"

He's chucked into that cell like a lifeless doll, slamming the gate shut as if to show the man his mistakes. A pack of men that sat around, some grinning maliciously while others eye the new inmate up and down, close in around his personal space. They reek from the aura of people who seek vengeance... Vengeance for strangers, to them. He's known this ever since his trial was given; the majority of the inmates at the prison he was assigned have a high dislike towards those who show malice towards women, or children.

The household was investigated after their oldest daughter had stepped up on the pedestal of courage. Their youngest had sneaked into her room, the moon high up on its place in the sky already, to tell her what their father had done the day prior.

"Father made me really, really uncomfortable. But not the usual," he'd said. "It really felt like he was going to harm me, you know? I felt like he was going to follow me into my room to beat me or hurt me when nobody else expected it."

"But did he follow you into your room, Shoto?" She'd asked with bated breath.
"No, but the threats all happened again."

With her brother resting on her bed, sleeping after finally feeling safe again in his own home, she dialed emergency. The trial was accepted immediately, though with their father's reputation, the fight for justice was a tougher one to carry.

Ever since their victory, with their father out of the picture, the house was put under the oldest daughter's name. The youngest lives under her roof while he completes his middle school and high school years, while the oldest brother moves out to a nearby apartment complex.

I'll be moving tomorrow.
Past habits and haps make me hesitant to leave her in this house, alone and without someone else to bounce off from. She seems to be at peace with my choice of living at my new school's new dormitories, though, which makes my guilt subside.

I left at sunset, my bag tucked under my arm as my hands kept busied with a few fidget rings she'd bought me. She waved gaily at me as the driver took her time to take off. I never asked her about that look of relief in her eyes, but I could faintly connect it to how she's always wanted me gone from a house so filled with dark memories. She said it would be like a healthy dosage of pills to my brain.

Still, over my joy of leaving to a better place, I made sure to show my gratefulness towards all that she's done for me-- the rapidness of which she acted towards our mental health, how she prioritized diagnosis for both me and her, how she put in all of her effort to make sure I had a good enough rest of my childhood. I'll be missing her greatly throughout these next few years.
