"YOU WILL NOT LEAVE THIS PLACE UNTIL I ALLOW YOU TO DO SO! UNDERSTAND?! Such an ungrateful pest !" shouting these words, Mildred shoved Hayley into the small storeroom in the orphanage and slammed the door shut. Hayley curled her fists and slid against the door, trying not to cry.
It has been a week since Claire left the orphanage and things have never been so hard on Hayley. She had to bear all the taunts from the others in the orphanage, and didn't have a single person to support her. She was trying hard to put a lid over her emotions, but things got out of her hand. She could bear with all the taunts and insults until an hour ago.
The kids in the orphanage started rounding around her, saying things like "Claire would've been more than happy to leave a freak like you". Deep down that caught on to Hayley and she thought maybe it was true. Yet she tried her best to control her emotions by taking deep breaths. But she lost all forms of control when a boy screamed saying, " I'm sure your parents left you here to rot because they knew you were an abnormal freak, maybe even a monster... Who knows?..."
"SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP!!!!", Hayley let out a shrill scream, a scream no one around her could bear to hear, as they shut their ears and at the same moment, all the window panes surrounding them shattered, the glass shreds blasting everywhere.
Ms Mildred had taken Hayley to her cabin, where Hayley received a beating and a long session of rebuking, after which she was up in the storeroom.
Sitting in the dimly lit room, Hayley couldn't help but cry. She wanted things to be simple, she wanted to know why this happens to her. Her mind went back to the time she was happy and when no one pushed her away. Her thoughts wandered to their old caretaker Ms Janet, things were great for Hayley when Ms Janet was here, she could still remember her warm smile. As Hayley got stuck in a whirlwind of feelings, she lost track of time.
After few hours, someone unlocked the door, which started Hayley out of her trance. "Ms Mildred called you to the office" spoke the girl who opened the door, before hurrying away from Hayley, as soon as possible. Hayley slowly stood up and trudged to the office, in dread for another session of accusing piled against her and about how her actions resulted in a lot of damage.
Hayley understood the weight of her actions, she was equally frustrated at this as she never wanted anyone to get hurt because of her. She was thankful that no one got hurt today.
Hayley hesitantly knocked on the door of the office and heard a "Come in,".
She slowly opened the door, Ms Mildred was sitting at her usual place behind the table, but another woman was there too, sitting by the side of the table.
She was in a long black dress and had a long emerald coloured coat in her hand, she was wearing square spectacles and her black hair was tied up in a tight bun, she sported a gentle yet stern expression on her face.
The woman started to speak, "Hello Hayley, pleasure to see you, also wishing you a very happy eleventh birthday", Hayley was taken aback by the wish, her eyes immediately searched for the calendar hanging on the wall, it indeed was her birthday today. "Thank you" Hayley replied in a small voice. A slight warmth crept into her at the fact that someone wished her.
"Can we both talk Hayley? The two of us, in private" asked the woman looking at Hayley. Hayley involuntarily turned to Mildred, who seemed flustered.
"I imagine, why would there be a need to talk in private, while we are perfectly capable of holding a conversation right here and right now " Mildred said,
"I insist Ms Mildred, I want to have a free conversation with Hayley" said the woman. The two women kept staring at each other, as though having a conversation. Mildred's eyes squinted in irritation,
"Very well then, I'll leave you both to yourselves" said Mildred, and huffed out in annoyance that she has to leave her office.
After Mildred left, shutting the door, the woman took a stick like thing from her coat and swished it. Hayley's eyes shook, to and forth from the woman's face and her hand. The woman let out a small smile and started to speak, "Sit down, sit down. Now let me introduce myself to you, I'm Professor Minerva Mcgonagall from Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry".
"I'm sorry Hogwarts school of what?" questioned Hayley as she seated herself in one of the chairs. "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and as the name suggests, we train young witches and wizards in magic. And you Miss Hayley, are a witch, so on behalf of Hogwarts, I'm here to recruit you" finished Mcgonagall.
"Magic ?" questioned Hayley. "I'm sure you've made some unexplainable things happen when you're happy or sad or when you've wanted something," said Mcgonagall, with a slight hint of confidence. Hayley looked dumbstruck at Mcgonagall.
"Now don't look at me like that, I can offer you proof," said Mcgonagall, taking the stick-like thing from her coat. She gave it a particular movement, to Hayley's astonishment and surprise, the chairs they were sitting on, were now two feet above the ground. Hayley let out a gasp, her eyes widening in shock, as she gripped onto the chair tightly. Mcgonagall gave the stick another movement and the chairs slowly settled back to the bottom. Mcgonagall looked at Hayley expectantly.
"So all things I've been doing till now was... magic? ... Why wasn't I able to control it? " asked Hayley.
"Magic is a very delicate entity Hayley, it should be used with utmost care and consciousness, for it to come out perfectly. This is what we teach at Hogwarts, to control your magic. Magic is capable of doing some very beautiful things if we abide by its laws". Hayley nodded at her understanding.
"This is your letter from the school regarding the beginning of the new term and all other supplies you will need" said Mcgonagall, handing the letter to Hayley.
"I would like to stay with you and talk more, but I need to help more students like you, as the deputy headmistress of the school. I will ask for another one of the teachers, to accompany you to get the supplies. I'm sure you have many questions and you are free to clear those with us, " said Mcgonagall to which Hayley replied "Yes Ma'am".
Professor Mcgonagall once more pulled out the stick from her coat and noticed Hayley's curious gaze on it. "We call this a wand Hayley, you are also going to get one for yourself. Each wand is different just like each one of us is different, Mr Ollivander can explain it to you more elaborately", said Mcgonagall, "Ok Professor" replied Hayley.
Professor Mcgonagall mutters something, waving her wand and a bunch of silver rays started to burst from the end of it elegantly which then transformed into a stunning silver cat, which started circling the room gracefully, before coming to a stop in front of the Professor. "Approach one of the professors who are free, and tell them I need one of them to come here and help me recruit a student," Professor Mcgonagall spoke to the silver cat. The cat dipped its head before running away and disappearing.
"Professor that was so beautiful" Hayley said in awe, to Mcgonagall, "This one is called a Patronus Charm. It is used to someone a guardian who will help you, to tell in simple words. A very difficult charm to perform, nonetheless extremely useful" replied Professor Mcgonagall.
Hayley couldn't help but gush a lot of questions to which the Professor replied patiently. Hayley couldn't wait to know more about this world, she still has a lot of doubts but was certain her life would never be the same again.
