The Beginning

There was complete silence in the dinning table. Stella sat at the head, her eyes glued down to the plate of food in front of her. Zander and Sybilla next, the two had yet to speak, even to acknowledge one another. Izabella had decided to eat breakfast on her room, she had stayed out in Starhaven until the sun had come out again, it was comfortable she had said, walking around the city looking for something to do that wasn't sitting and waiting.

Aubrette stepped inside the room and felt his stare on her immediately. She had already finished the book, only taking her a couple of hours to do so. Dorian bowed his head as she took her sit in front of him, Sybilla beside her.

Most of the acrux members had already left, Adrean and Faye making their way back to Mistburgh the night before. Favian returning to Light Vale not long after, Cora, she'd learned spent most of her time in Starhaven as she was the only healer available.

"Dorian" Stella said. "Will we be waiting for Phoenix today?"

"How is she by the way? Her left wing was still a little crooked when I last saw her" Cora replied, taking a sip from her cup after.

"Phoenix will not come to Starhaven Stella. We talked about this already"

"Well, with Morte falling under Infernum rulings I thought..."

"I'm here, aren't I?" He said, dropping his fork and turning to her. "Besides, if my sister wanted to interrogate Morte face to face she would have done it already"

Stella faked a smile. "Oh I know"

Aubrette looked at Dorian, then at Stella. "You're interrogating him again today?"

"Yes" Dorian replied.

"I want to be there"Aubrette said, Stella's laugh flooding through the room. "Something funny?"

"Dear," she said, venom on her voice. "You should be glad I'm even letting you hear this conversation"

Aubrette pushed her plate forward. "Morte said he knew my mother. He attacked me. I should be included"

"Let her come" Dorian said. "What are you so afraid of Stella? Someone outsmarting you for once?"

Stella's smile dropped. "She is no one. I'm sorry but why are we all pretending than her being a blessed and a fancy last name allows her to call herself queen?" Her eyes shifted to Aubrette's. "You will not be a part of this court, until you legally ascend to a throne. And you Dorian, have no right telling..."

"I'm head aren't I?" Dorian said, his eyes darkening again. "And in your own words, Morte falls in infernum ruling. So my word overtrumps yours right now."

Silence fell in the room.

"The shift has not yet taken place" Stella said. "So my word is still definite."

Dorian stayed still a moment and Aubrette could almost see him fighting against his own brain, fighting against his own instincts the way she had done so many times before.

"You're entering the shift?" Zander asked. Aubrette turned to him, a silent shocked expression in his eyes.

"Of course I am" Dorian said, and carried on eating.

"You have yet to decide on a witness" Stella added. "Better hurry on that and make it official, I have yet to know how many clothes to pack"

Aubrette watch as a grin made its way back onto Dorian's face.

It had taken her three hours to make it out of her bedroom and down the path of Lynx towards the heart of the city by her own. Aubrette had no looked back, even as the streets of the city started passing her by and she knew both mountains would be far enough away to be covered, she kept her eyes straight forwards, concentrating on the city ahead, and not what was happening behind her.
