♕ A Promise and a Half ♕

Heaven had walked through the portal instead, and her heart had fallen to the floor as she watched her fall and cry, turning back as the portal closed in their backs, locking Dorian in the other side. And she had understood, had felt a fool for not thinking about it the second he'd chosen not to cross through with her. And even when he'd lied, she had not been able to get angry at him, not when Heaven needed to be home much faster than he did.

Still, Aubrette had felt her heart crack open. She needed him safe, needed to know he was no longer there, with the mountain still threatening to fall under them, and he had promised her, he had sworn never to scare her again, and he had broken that promise not even two minutes later.

"Stop moving!" Phoebe yelled. "You'll make a hole in the ground, the stars know we have enough of those"

Aubrette sighed as she sat back on her chair, Nevaeh asleep in the middle of the room. He had been too close to her, had kept trying to get to her, to cross through the shadows, had been too close when she let her light explode around her, and it had sent him flying off. Phoebe had caught him before he could slip of the mountains edge, but he was far too injured by the time anyone got there to help them. And all of those who'd been far too close as well, all of those Phoebe had not been looking out for as she'd watched Nev fly, they might not make it through the night. And that was on her too.

"Dorian will be fine" Bren said, moving to check on the wrapped wounds of Nevaeh.

"Besides, he'll bring us news of Syb and Zander Bree" Izabella said, grabbing her hand.

"Bree?" Phoebe said. "Thats a cute nickname, I didn't know you like nicknames. Sort of sounds like breem-stone doesn't it" she said turning to her, trying to cheer her up.

"Bree is the name she used when she was trying to pass off as not the princess" Izabella said smiling. "I can't get used to calling her anything else."

Aubrettte fiddle with the edge of her shirt as the two of them started talking about Goldcrest and Aureums. She wished Sybilla and Zander had been able to come, wished Zander did not have to stay behind, that she could've had a chance to say goodbye to both, wished she'd say everything she' been holding back from telling them before she had left again.

They wouldn't know how much had gone wrong until Dorian arrived, all that they truly knew was that Aubrette had destroyed more than half of the Gloas castle, and that neither of them had been able to spot the necklace.

"I'll go sleep" Aubrette said standing up. "Let me know if he wakes up please?"

"We'll come get you for breakfast okay? Stop thinking about him and just rest, you'll need it" Phoebe said.

"I'll try." She said. "Be safe please"

"Promise" Izabella said nodding.

Aubrette walked out, crossing the hall and walking downstairs towards his room. The half dimmed lighting covered almost every corner of the room, she walked up to the window, wondering how Dorian could ever stare past the darkness of the clouds that concealed them, but still stared outside, hoping she would somehow be able to see him coming. Hoping he would keep his promise, and all the fear inside her chest was not real.

The sun was starting to rise when she moved to the bed, and rested her head on his pillow, never letting herself close her eyes.

She woke up to the sound of feet almost rolling against the carpet. A door shutting close letting her know she was no longer alone. It was dark enough for her to know she'd slept for most of the day. She watched silently as he placed his clothes aside and changed into new ones before climbing into bed with her, not noticing her being away.
