Have you ever wondered what it might be like to live without giving a shit about the world or what may become of you? Because that was exactly how Humphrey had lived his entire life. It had never once crossed his mind that one day he would not crack a joke. That one day he would study for hours on end. That he'd distance himself. That he'd forget.

He had forgotten. He had forgotten what it felt like to smile, what his laugh sounded like. He had forgotten to sleep properly, nor was he eating well, and Regulus caught on easily.

"Hey, Humph." Reg smiled brightly, sitting down beside him in the library, a place you would usually never see him. "What are you reading?" He kept a cheerful tone and an excited smile.

"Um-" He checked the front cover, "Hogwarts a History." His voice was tired and mumbled. Humphrey really needed to sleep. He needed to eat. But Regulus was not prepared to bring it up in conversation, he knew how it felt.

"I love that book! I read it in 1st year. Are you enjoying it?"

"Yeah...s'great." He dropped his head to his hand and rubbed his eyes.

"Where's Bailey? Have you spoken to her recently?"

"Spoke with her yesterday." Regulus took a deep breath, he was really trying here.

"Oh, really? That's good!"

"Yeah..."

Regulus' smile dropped, turning into a frown and he ran his hand over his face. "Humphrey, I'm working so hard to talk to you right now. Can you at least try to cooperate?"

"Fuck, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'll try harder, okay? I'm sorry." Reg sighed, nodding and stood up from his seat. He patted Humphrey's shoulder, causing him to turn around to look at him.

"Come to the kitchens with me." Humph shook his head and Regulus laughed. "It wasn't a question. Up you get." He rolled his eyes but did get up in the end.

Regulus left the Great hall after dinner and began his way back to the dungeons. He had managed to make Humphrey eat when they went to the kitchens that morning. It wasn't much, but it was something.

He was confused when he arrived at their dorm room to find the door slightly ajar and voices coming from inside. He was one of the very first people to leave the hall and he clearly remembered three of his roommates sat at the Slytherin table, still eating. The only other person it could be was Humphrey, but then again, why would he have the door open? He was just about to call his name when he looked around the door but he paused when he saw the scene in front of him.
