KETTERDAM, SUCH AN interesting city on the edge of the murky water. Interesting in the way that if one accidentally took the wrong path, they could get their eyes ripped out of their head by someone they didn't know.

If Vera wasn't hiding from all who could possibly know and hunt her (and if one of them wasn't one of the most powerful men in the world) she would have gladly spent her days spreading shadows amongst the already dim paths.

However even though Vera was a shadow summoner, Katiya was not. A disappointing reality came crashing upon Vera once she made it to the horrifically smelly city: she could no longer be a shadow summoner. At least, she couldn't anywhere she wanted like she was able to in Ravka. Now she was stuck restricting her natural urges amongst the cramped streets. Instead, she focused on the civilians of the city.

Often she couldn't help but get distracted by the sight of the city being with life—if you could even call it that. Vera believed no one was truly alive in Ketterdam. Each person who walked by was simply a shell of greed or pity, all with some sort of criminal past. Some were even still living it. There were so many differences between it and Os Alta, the only other place she had ever known.

Vera could be distracted by the bright lights and hurried bodies. At least, she was distracted, until she felt her braid being lifted slightly, the loose hair tickling her neck as it did so. Vera breathed out as she kept her gaze on the busy alleyway she had been watching for action. "You touch my hair again Jesper, and you just might just lose your trigger finger." She warned without looking back.

She felt Jesper reel back and almost smack into the wall, the light grip on her braid disappearing so fast it was like it was never there. He quickly joked out of nervousness, "That would be bad for business."

"Wouldn't it?" Vera gave him a small smile to show that she was still thinking about going through with the action and he laughed a little out of anxiety. It was clear Jesper wasn't sure if she was serious or not. Since the night they had met, he had always struggled with it.

From behind her, she heard footsteps approaching after the door to Kaz's office locked. They were easy to recognize by their confident and ordered stride, but the click of the cane that followed them helped a lot.

Then, he spoke, "Why are you two up here?" Kaz's voice rang in her ear, his voice having an underlying disappointed tone. They both knew why. They were supposed to be working.
