"ARE YOU GOING to stare at me all day or are you finally going to ask me whatever is on your mind?" Vera questioned, tired of feeling his glare on the back of her head. Usually, she wouldn't mind, but right now he was suspicious, not just looking. It bothered her. She needed to know how much he was aware of.

"You knew Arken before we arrived," Kaz stated, his intense gaze not wavering in the slightest as they continued to move along the stalls, looking for a goat to purchase.

Vera hummed and rebutted, "That is not a question."

"You've been in the Fold before. The trip obviously didn't go as planned since he detests the idea of going with you again." Kaz slowed down and Vera followed. She stopped when he did. Kaz leaned closer, still leaving a decent distance between them to make sure they wouldn't accidentally touch (Saints knew they couldn't do that) as he quietly asked, "Are you Grisha?"

She thought for a few seconds, simply staring into his stunning ice-cold blue eyes. He did have quite nice eyes. She wasn't sure she had ever noticed them before. She snapped out of it before asking, "You want the long answer or the short answer?"

"Whichever will leave to fewer surprises in the future," Kaz said, his voice serious, quick like a snake's threatening hiss.

Vera had a realization, or at least she thought she had. Her eyebrows raised as she felt an ache swarm her heart, feeling crushed by his attitude. He's just concerned about the job and whether me being Grisha will affect it. He didn't care about her.

Vera took in a deep breath. She thought about blurting: I'm the General's second in command and a shadow summoner. But all that came out was a simple, "Yes."

"And you're Fierdan?" Kaz clarified.

Even he, a normal human, knew of the problem with his words. A Fierdan Grisha? It was an equation for danger.

My accent only scares me every day. Vera had grown to hate the sound of her voice. Her accent sent her back to the darkest find of her life, and she detested it. That was one of the reasons why she was quiet. "Yes." She repeated.

Kaz's eyes widened for a split second before he got over his surprise. Then he moved out of the way as someone in the crowd almost bumped into him. He scowled at them and then turned to Vera. He looked over her face, "We'll talk about this later."
