THE CROWS HAD stopped their ride in East Ravka, Ryevost to be more exact. Vera had been to the small town only a few times, yet she knew the basic layout of it. She looked at the busy citizens trying to sell their items at stands.

"Katiya." Kaz's voice caught her attention. Vera turned around, finding him closer than she had expected. His eyes may have softened, or she was just seeing what she wanted to, but he nodded his head towards the back of the carriage. "Come on."

Vera nodded her head, making her way to the back of the carriage and standing next to Inej. Together, the girls watched the lock bust off the trunk. The sun summoner inside was resourceful, it seemed. Alina climbed out of the trunk, only to jump at the sight of the Crows.

"We don't want any trouble." Jepser said quickly, figuring he was a better approach than the constantly glaring Kaz.

"Neither do I," Alina said calmly, her hands raised like she were speaking to a wounded animal, "so I'll just be on my way." She turned to her right, aiming to walk away, but Kaz's cane was whipped up to block her path.

Alina froze at the action, turning back to the Crows as Jesper assured, "Clearly, you want out of East Ravka. But we can help you. We have a secure route through the Fold."

Vera eyed Jesper. We do? Last I knew Arken was caught in the Little Palace. His faux argument didn't matter anyways, as Alina brushed off, "I prefer to travel alone."

Jesper objected, "Don't be rash. You stick with us, everybody gets what they want."

"I'm not being anyone's captive ever again." Alina's voice was firm and her words resonated with the blonde watching her with wide eyes. She wouldn't argue about this. Vera didn't doubt the girl would take to action soon. "So step aside and let me pass."

"I'm afraid we can't let that happen." Kaz denied.

Since she had been so focused on them, Vera had seen Alina reach her hands upwards and create a ball of blinding light. Inej had had the same quick reflexes as Vera and had covered her eyes in time. Mostly unfazed, the two girls looked at Alina who looked at them with wide eyes.

Inej raised her hands to show she meant no harm. And Alina started backing away but glanced at Vera. Vera slowly lowered her arms, nodding her head towards the town behind them.
