Charlotte
After school, I made my way to the changing rooms. I got dressed into some old lacrosse padding and made my way outside onto the field.
I was lucky that there was another girl on the team so that I wouldn't be outnumbered completely, if I even got on the team. Her name was Cammi or something similar. She was nice, although I'd never actually spoken to her, she wasn't the most sociable person but I knew that she had a few friends, kind of like me.
This wasn't so much a practice as it was a way to get everyone who tried out in the same place, I assume to either congratulate or humiliate them.
There was fourteen of us who tried out in total making it very difficult to choose only two. There were eleven boys and only three girls, myself included.
Coach got out his clipboard and muttered something to himself before turning to look at us with a stern look on his face. "Alright!" He shouted, getting everyone's attention. "I am going to call out your name and whoever I say is out, got it?" He yelled again.
The were a few murmurs from the crowed and I felt my nerves grow tight.
All of my friends were sat on the stands waiting for me and even that slightly intimidated me, if I was kicked off I'd have to walk over to them and say that I failed.
That thought sent a shiver down my spine before I composed myself and plastered the most neutral expression on my face that I could muster.
"Ok, here goes nothing." Coach sighed heavily. "Dylan, Tyler.."
It went on that way for a little while and every name that got called gave me more and more anxiety to the point where I literally wanted to throw up.
It was down to two girls, me and someone else, and one of the boys that was making fun of me during practice.
The girl was one of the fastest, human, runners I had ever seen, she out ran all of the boys but I ran comfortably in front of her, she was the strongest thrower I'd seen too, I knew for sure she'd make the team.
But between me and that guy, it was tough.
"And...." Coach stalled with a teasing grin on his face making my stomach do loops. "Jack. Sorry buddy, we need more girls on the team." He said shortly.
Jack started to argue but coach held up his hands in defence. "Hey, not my policy, take it up with someone else." He said and Jack stormed off.
A huge grin stretched its way across my face and the sickness turned into a sort of floating sensation.
"That was a total lie." Coach said. "School doesn't care who's on the team I just didn't want to bruise his ego too much." He winked.
The girl and I looked at each other, both sporting the same smile.
"Alright, practice is every Monday after school, there's a game once a month but I'll tell you in advance. You can change in the girls locker room obviously and McCall is our captain, you have any issues, take it up with him. Also, I expect you both to have your own gear and sticks, you can buy them from the school or... anywhere else really. Got it?" Coach said and we both nodded. "Alright, go get changed and I'll see you in gym." He said and he started walking off.
The other girl turned to me and held out her hand. "Tami." She smiled. I saw that she had braces when she spoke and I thought hey suited her face nicely.
I offered my hand and she shook it warmly.
"Charlotte." I smiled.
"Well, I guess I'll see you on the field." She smiled and turned away.
