The sun was just beginning to set when Sombra finally stirred from his daytime slumber. He retreated from the mares comforting warmth and got up to stretch his legs. He knew he would have to work twice as hard tomorrow, what with his plans already being behind, but he felt the need to be near her. He didn't understand it, and he most certainly didn't like it. Anyone who had intentionally gotten that close to him would be dead by now. He always had a lingering paranoia that they were spies, sent to destroy his hard-earned empire or even just him.

And although that paranoia stayed, he had pushed it away to the back of his conscience. Sombra looked down at the sleeping mare. She was curled up in the same position as when he had her in his hooves. A smile forced its way onto Sombra's lips and he quickly pulled himself together. He couldn't let the bond take over his mind. Love was a weakness. Emotion alone was a weakness. If he fell in love with this mare then who knows what his enemies could do to him? A thousand years ago when they took hostages and prisoners from his empire, he had no care for it. They meant nothing to him in the grand scheme of things. But now- if they get the right pony-

He shook his head, breaking his line of thought before fear pierced his heart for the first time in over a millennia. Nothing would happen. And if he did end up gaining stronger feelings for her, he would just have to make sure his enemies had no opportunity to snatch her from him.

A wolf howled in the distance, through the blizzard raging outside. Sombra frowned. Things he had never considered dangerous before were becoming more and more concerning. He could easily deal with those wolves, but his mate? She looked like she could barely hurt a fly...

Nodding to himself, he began pacing back and forth in the cavern. Every potential danger would have to be accounted for before the final stage of his plan could commence. He would have to make sure she was safe at every turn. His full powers were slowly returning, but he didn't have nearly enough yet to create anything that could help to protect her. So he would have to do it himself. As he always said, if you want something done you have to do it yourself, and Sombra knew in his heart that even if he did have the power to create something to protect her, he still wouldn't trust it as much as he would trust himself. He let out a frustrated sigh, running his hoof through his mane.

As the sun finally disappeared under the horizon, Sombra looked over at the bed where his mate still lay, sleeping soundly. He approached the bed, careful not to wake her, and he clambered back in, edging closer and closer until he had his hooves around her again in a protective embrace.

It would have been easier to carry out his plan if he hadn't bumped into her in Canterlot, but he liked this...
