As Y/N flew out of the tunnel and lost her balance in the wind of the frozen north, a roar of anger followed behind. She began to sprint through the snow as fast as she could, and when the light of the moon shone through the snow clouds, Y/N took to the sky, her wings powerful enough to resist the storm. Razor sharp snow cut through her bare skin as she flew through the air, but it didn't matter to her. The snowstorm separated Y/N from Sombra's view, and although she could hear his cries of anger and see crystal sprouting from the ground below her, she refused to look back. She kept flying, and even though she had no idea where she was flying to, Y/N felt lighter than she ever had before.

Sombra however, felt nothing but rage. As his eyes searched the snowstorm for any sign of Y/N, his hopes grew slimmer by the second. Something in his mind snapped and he let out a guttural roar, dark crystal sweeping randomly across the snowy landscape, glinting menacingly. His breathing became laboured as he forced himself to turn back and re-enter his empire. Everything was blurred in his vision when he walked back through the empire's centre and into the castle. Sombra thought he heard someone say something to him, but it might have just been in his head. The door to his bedroom closed and he fell to the ground. What had he done? Why had he let her go? The one thing he cared about was no longer under his protection. Anything could happen, he thought. She could be in so much danger, and he had just let her go...

Another surge of anger flew through him like raging flames and his cries petrified the guards outside. The door to the bedroom was shattered and Sombra, blinded with emotion, impaled the nearest pony he could see on a spike of crystal. The choked screams, the blood pouring from their chest, it did nothing to stop his uncontrollable feelings. Would the torture never end?
With his vision blurred and red, he walked down to the palace entrance, brutally slaughtering anypony he saw. As he gutted the final guard beside the palace doors, watching his insides seep onto the shining crystal ground, Sombra heard a voice behind him.

He turned to see Y/N watching from a distance.

Running towards her, he lunged at her body but instead fell to the crystal floors behind her. She turned and continued staring him, a disappointed look on her face. Sombra stood, shakily, and waved his hoof around. It went right through her.

"What apparition is this?" he whispered gruffly. "Do not toy with me."
Y/N only smiled, coldly, as a warbled, disconnected voice entered the air around her. "You failed me..."
Sombra watched as the strange, unearthly being walked around him, taking in his every detail.
"It's your fault I left. You made me hate you..." she said quietly.
"I won't deign to listen to this shit. Not from one who unapologetically takes the form of the pony I care for." Sombra spat at the ground where she 'stood'.
"I am Y/N. Whether your mind conjured me or not is something you should work out for yourself."
"She would never say what you are saying now! You are nothing but a shapeshifting spirit come to taunt me!"
A ghostly laugh reverberated in his ears. Sombra took a step back, his heart beginning to beat faster.
"I only tell you what you already know, my king... You pushed me away. You told me to leave. You let me go. It's your fault."

"SHUT UP!" Sombra bared his teeth at the distorted image of his love, horn glowing brightly. "I will get her back, she just doesn't know it yet. SHE CAN'T RUN FROM ME AND WHEN I HAVE HER IN MY GRASP AGAIN, BY CELESTIA I WILL NOT LET HER GO!" His breathing was laboured as he stared daggers into the apparition.

"I have run from you. I'll never love you now. I know you're evil. I know you can't change..."

Sombra let out a roar of fury and dark crystal sprouted around him, pushing through the image of Y/N and turning it to smoke before his eyes. He curled into himself as her laugh echoed in his mind. Was he going crazy? Horn still aglow with magic, his crystals converged above him to create a protective dome. Sombra swore he heard screams and the crashing of doors, but over everything, he heard her laugh, and the same words repeating over and over again.

"You failed me..."
"You're not good enough..."
"I hate you..."

Sombra cried out in rage and anguish, crystals sprouting throughout the kingdom randomly, sharp enough to cut anything that touched them.

As a chilling numbness washed over him and he looked up to see Celestia, he couldn't even tell if she was real.
