Chapter Twenty Four

Erin had just gotten the results that she had been raped. By the same man. Twice. In under a year.

On the inside she was numb, she didn't even know what to feel or how to express it.

Jay was furious on the other hand, they were waiting for discharge papers so they could head back to the district and catch that son of a bitch.

"Not only is he a sadistic bastard, he runs a pedophile ring and rapes women" Jay's tone was level but so angry. Erin just got up from her bed and hugged him.

Her touch once again making him melt completely. Jay felt safe with her, he was constantly worried about her and that something bad could happen. And he was right, something bad could happen. But if it did. He'd be right there ready to help her, find her, comfort her or whatever it is that she needed. Jay swore himself to that.

"You're free to go" A nurse said lightly as she popped her head in the door. Both detectives thanked her before heading up to the ICU where Hailey, Adam and Kim currently were.

Jay and Erin walked through the doors to find a fretting Antonio.

"Tony what's up?" Jay asked, worried something happened to his friends.

"Uh nothing everything's fine I'm just worried that something will go wrong but everything will be fine" Jay didn't understand what kind of relationship Antonio had with the three that were hospitalized. Tony was closest to Al, Erin, Voight and Jay.

Not that the others weren't his friends but he hadn't spent years with them like he did with the others.

But after looking around a bit it turns out everyone was worried. Voight even looked worried. His usual calm expression was cracked slightly.

It was understandable.

They could loose three of their best detectives and friends in one big swoop. It was a lot to process. And Erin didn't want to tell him about the rape kit just yet, Voight had enough on his plate as is.

Jay and Erin went and sat down with the others for a while. When I say a while I mean it.

A couple hours passed and Jay had fallen asleep on Erin's shoulder. Which she thought was one cute, and two the perfect photo opportunity.

She snapped a couple pictures before she let her mind wander.

First it wandered to Jay, how relieved she was to see him. How he still felt the same, or how he was still one of the strongest people she knew.

Her mind then wandered off to Hailey, worrying about her. Hoping she'd make it.

Then it went over to Adam and Kim, how they were. If Kim would make it or not, and how Adam would cope with the surgery.

Voight came to mind next, hoping he was okay. She hadn't heard much from him about Olive and Daniel who now lived in Scottsdale. She missed her nephew and Olive loads. But she knew it was for the best whilst Olive grieved the loss of her husband and her baby's father. Hank and Erin were traumatized after Justin had been killed, Hank took some time off.

Erin continued to work, not wanting to let her mind have control. She worried Jay a lot. She had trouble sleeping, would wake up in the middle of the night sweating and crying. Jay did his absolute best in those times which helped Erin tons. But the thought of finding Justin in the trunk of that car, bullet would to the head and tied up with barbed wire.

The night where Voight killed the guy that hurt Justin. Erin shuddered. Trying not to think of it.

Her mind then wandered to a little three year old girl. Her daughter. Their daughter. Hadley Mae Halstead-Lindsay. Erin felt a rush of emotion overcome her body, she never did think she'd grieve so little after seeing her daughter dead. But now it was all hitting her, in the middle of the waiting room and she felt like she was drowning.

Her breath became shallow and her heartbeat quickened, she was lucky Jay was a heavy sleeper. She didn't want to add to whatever he already had on his plate.

Luckily, her thoughts were cut short by Dr Rhodes and Dr Bekker walking into the waiting room.

It was full of uniforms, the States Attorney even people from the Ivory Tower. Waiting to see what would happen to some of the best detectives in Chicago.

"I have some good news" Dr Rhodes spoke first.

"Adam tolerated the surgery really well. We successfully removed his left kidney and he's in recovery now" Everyone sighed with relief. Tick. He's on the mend.

Dr Rhodes then spoke again,
"Kim developed compartment syndrome with where the bullet pierced her abdomen. We took her to the OR and successfully relieved the pressure so she too is in recovery" there were more sighs of relief again.

Two were now on the mend. But Erin's heartbeat faltered when she was waiting to hear about Hailey.

The doctors looked at each other before Dr Rhodes handed the floor to Dr Bekker.

"Haileys first surgery went well, we managed to locate the bleed. Isolate it and stop it" okay good news Erin thought as Jay took her hand

"The second surgery. Her kidney transplant was a lot harder than it should've been. Adams kidney was a perfect match, except Haileys body was already loosing a lot of blood. Her heart stopped in the operating room" Erin heard the words she was so worried about, her heart sank. But they didn't say she was dead, so she kept hope.

"We managed to get her back, and we finished the kidney surgery. But once we were finished, her heart started to fail. We think that due to excessive loss of blood and due to the severe trauma from the gunshot wound. Haileys body was starting to fail. Her aortic artery was very small, not pumping enough blood to the rest of her body, which is probably why it went into shock" Dr Bekker looked around at all the anxious faces, she sighed before continuing.

"We managed to fix her aortic artery by widening it with a balloon. Her body is extremely weak right now, she's on ECMO so her lungs and heart don't have to work as hard. She's got a really long road ahead of her, and I'm sorry. But she might not even make it through the night" The words that Dr Bekker spoke before Erin's legs gave way and she fell to the ground sobbing.

It shattered her world. She couldn't loose Hailey, not like this. Erin's sobs echoed through the corridor.

Jay was the only thing that could make Erin feel safe right now.

And even that didn't seem to be working.
