Chapter Fifty Five

Erin sat in the waiting room on the edge of her seat. Waiting to hear an update on her daughter.

Jay was sitting in the chair next to her running his thumb over her knuckles, not even moments later they heard the vague yelling of CPD in the ED. They both exchanged a worried look before running out to see Al on a stretcher with blood pouring out of his body.

Erin stumbled a little at the sight before Antonio ran into the ED. Blood on his sleeves, Als blood.

"What happened?!" Jay looked Antonio up and down before noticing how shaky he was. He put a hand on his shoulder before encouraging him to continue.

"Ethan he was there. Carlos told us there was only going to be McLeod"

"Where Antonio, where did you go?"

"I don't know. This abandoned warehouse I think. McLeod was supposed to be there alone and we were going to take him, flip him and get to Ethan. But it didn't work and Al got shot and..." Antonio's voice trailed off as Hailey, Kim and the rest of the unit ran into the ED.

"What are you guys doing here?" Kim was worried. Al was her partner for four years before she got partnered with Adam again.

"How's Haddy?" Hailey hugged her best friend tightly.

"We don't know what's wrong with her. She's been out like a light for a while. They're optimistic that she will wake up but they don't know the severity of her problem of what happened at all" Erin once again put her head on Jays chest and he just stroked her hair.

They all headed to the waiting room where a pretty brunette with green eyes and freckles was waiting.

"What are you doing here?" Hailey scurried over and hugged the brunette, before pulling apart and kissing her.

"Erin called me. Told me what happened I'm so sorry Hails" Hailey cuddled into the girls arms before turning around.

Everyone's faces were in shock.

Hailey led her supposed girlfriend over to her team,
"Guys this is Lyric. My girlfriend" The waiting room was now full of life with everyone making introductions whilst Hailey walked over to Erin and hugged her tight.

"Thank you" she whispered.

"Anything for you Hails. I didn't know if she'd make you feel better or not but I decided to call her anyway. I know this hasn't been easy on you so I thought you could use the extra support" Erin winked before dragging her best friend back to the team and making point to give Lyric a big hug.

The brunette spied Erin first and smiled. They both wrapped each other in a hug before Lyric pulled away.

"I didn't know if she'd want to see me. She hasn't called or texted in days" Erin's happiness was now replaced by worry and confusion.

"Really? She's been coming in every day and she seems better every hour" Now it was Lyrics turn to look confused. Hailey was lying to one of them.

They just had to find out who.

Erin didn't have much more time before Dr Rhodes and Will came out into the ED. The whole Unit went and saw them, eager for updates.

"Well we have good news and bad news. Which do you want first"

"Spit it out asshole don't add to the suspense" Jay retorted at his brother who rolled his eyes. Those Halstead men... Erin thought.

"Is Haddy okay?" Erin squeezed Jays hand, hoping their little girl was fine.

"She's doing better. We found out that she has aplastic anemia. Her body has stopped making blood cells, we need to find a match for a transplant. Since you guys are her biological parents you're probably going to be a match. But just in case you're not. Reach out to anyone, family members, even people here" Will referred to the Unit.

"Getting as many options as you can is always good. She's really weak right now, but she should be okay for a while" Jay and Erin breathed a huge sigh of relief. She was going to be okay.

Jay kissed the top of her head before Hank spoke,
"And Al is he okay?" Everyone now turned to Dr Rhodes, they were all tense and quiet. Hoping for the best.

"I'm sorry guys. He lost too much blood and the bullet went straight through his lung. There was less than a 1% chance of survival even before you brought him in. He's gone. I'm so sorry" Everyone's faces fell and their eyes welled up with tears.

They had just lost one of their own, their flesh and blood.

Erin knew what Hank would be feeling right now, the guilt, the grief. All of it. Because she felt exactly the same, when Nadia died.

Oh Nadia... The things she'd give to be able to give that girl a hug one last time. Tell her that she was proud of her for everything that she accomplished.

From being a runaway to someone with a good life ahead of her. Erin's heart strings tugged a little. Knowing she shouldn't go down that road again.

On the other hand, everyone was a mess. Michelle was here and she had just gotten the news. He would be joining Meredith and Lexi soon. But he still left behind a daughter.

Michelle was sitting in the corner with a patrol officer who she seemed to know quite well.

Hailey and Lyric sat together, Lyric gently stroking Haileys blonde hair and the blonde sobbed quietly into Lyrics chest. Although she didn't know Alvin well enough, she knew he was a good man. So being close with him or not, a family member was lost today.

Erin cuddled up into Jays chest again, forever feeling comforted the second he'd touch her. Knowing he'd never hurt her. And she just scanned the room, grief can always bring people together.

Kim and Adam had seemed to rekindle their relationship, they were sitting together. Both equally as distraught at the loss of their former partner.

The room was filled with so much grief and love at the same time, Erin felt Jays breath tremble a little. She knew he wanted to be strong for them, but she didn't want him to hide from himself. So she swapped with him and ran her nails through his hair before he too succumb to his emotions and gently put his head on her chest.

The only thing that was going okay right now, was this. Him.

He was her first and last thought every single day. Her person.

And she was confident that whatever would happen, they'd get through it.
