It had been about an hour since Erin had told her friends that she remembered the guy who shot her.
Since then, the whole Intelligence Unit had been rushing in and out of the room, including several detectives from the FBI like Hadley and Emmy. Many officers like Rollins, Carisi and Amaro from New York and of course Captain Benson.
Turns out this douchebag "James Sanguinetti" wasn't actually a real name instead it was an alias. The man her mother married was nothing but a liar.
Her mother always chose them well, Erin laughed to herself. Jay had been here this whole time, Erin knew it was equally because he was worried about her but also because she needed the protection.
Jay knew that Erin knew why he was staying around so much. But he still couldn't help but think to himself what more he could've done to protect her. He constantly asked himself if what happened was his fault, what more he could've done for her.
He should've been there.
But instead he walked out the door because he told himself he wasn't ready for the whole Haddy thing.
Turns out Jay was more than ready. At 34 you would've thought he wanted to get out, do his job, get drunk with his mates and not have a care in the world.
Yet the one of the two things he really wanted was right in front of him, Erin.
And the other, was a beautiful little girl with the most startling blue eyes. Hadley Mae Lindsay-Halstead.
The only thing Jay cared about right now though, was finding the asshole that hurt Erin.
And he and Voight gave each other a look that said "When we find him, we get him first". No one, would get away with attempted murder to a Chicago Police Officer. Especially of the most well respected Unit in Chicago.
Jay was brought out of his thoughts and Erin out of her dozed manner when Captain Benson, Voight and Special Agent Upton entered the room.
"Hey guys, so um we've found the actual name of the shooter. It's Ethan Yates, Greg Yates brother" Erin's face completely washed itself of colour.
Yates. His brother killed Nadia, the one person Erin swore she'd protect with her life.
Now, Ethan was responsible for almost taking it all away from her. Greg Yates was dead, but Ethan seemed to want to continue the family legacy.
Erin was 5'5 blonde and probably reminded Ethan of his mother. Probably the same bullshit story that Greg had, and he wanted to finish whatever his brother had started.
"Erin?" She was pulled out of her trance by Liv shaking her.
"Yeah sorry. What did you say?" Erin wanted to get out of here already. She felt stronger and her wound was nearly healed over. She wanted to catch this bastard herself and give him one last look at her before killing him like she did Greg Yates.
"You're going to need to stay here. We have patrol officers outside the door. You are not allowed to leave okay?" Hadleys tone was stern. Erin was slightly intimidated and even Voight looked spooked.
The Upton women were no joke.
"Yes ma'am" Erin agreed even though she wanted to protest and say that she could help. But one, she didn't want to piss off Hadley. And two, she knew she'd get nowhere.
Jay was tapping his leg on the ground. Erin knew he was anxious, he didn't want to leave her but Voight needed all hands on deck. She grabbed one of his hands and noticed that they were shaking.
She never knew why Jays body did that.
It was so scary and confusing for her. Was he really more anxious than he let on? What was eating him up on the inside?
She told herself he'd share that information when he wanted to, but after almost eight months she wanted to know what was really going on.
Erin heard footsteps then Hailey and Adam came running around the corner.
"Boss, we have a ping on his phone. We need to go" Adam fidgeted on the spot as Jay kissed Erin softly on the lips and mouthed an 'I love you' before rushing out the door with their colleagues.
Erin slumped back into her bed and closed her eyes. Thinking of Jay, as always. And how he'd go to the ends of the earth for her.
Jay, Voight and the whole unit were in hot pursuit of Ethan Yates' vehicle. The cars swerved left and right before Ethans blue sedan dipped down a side road. The Intelligence Unit lost complete visual and audio on the vehicle. How could it have done dark in two seconds? That was impossible.
"Damn it!" Jay cursed as he slammed the dash of his car.
Voight was pissed off, they had lost the only lead on the son of a bitch responsible for almost killing Erin.
All he could think about how he almost lost her, his body started to shake again. It responded like that to trauma, his PTSD from the army linked his shaking to many things. Jay had been prescribed meds for it but they only made him dull. He hated feeling that way so he didn't take them and just dealt with the tremors.
They sucked the fun out of anything sure, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the night terrors and the daily panic attacks.
He had overcome the worst with her help. And when she left, he thought of her everyday. Now with Haddy, they had built a real life together.
Jay was looking for an excuse to leave this whole thing behind. Just go away and not come back. This whole thing was such a shit fest for him and he was just so over it.
All he could think about, was his family. And how much he'd be willing sacrifice for them. His whole life had been a mess up until now and now he didn't want to go back.
Everything was so perfect and nothing could ruin it. He tried his best to forget his past, but at the end of the day.
His past controlled him but didn't stop him from thinking about his future.
Their future.
Together.
