It had been about an hour since they announced that Erin wouldn't make it.

Jays heart was shattered and Hailey was absolutely broken. Hadley held her baby sister close in a hug whilst Will talked to Jay about seeing Erin and stuff like that.

The whole day had been a blur, she still hadn't told Hadley about their dad. And now her best friend wasn't coming back.

The one person Hailey needed the most right now, was in that very room dying.

She broke free from her sisters grasp before heading to the bathroom, on her way she found a cart.

A scalpel lay on top, the blonde didn't even think she just grabbed it and ran. She darted around the corner and into the bathroom, what's the point of even living?

She thought to herself. She ran and slid down the wall in the bathroom.

So many things were rushing through her mind but she only thought of one thing.

That there wasn't any point in living if her best friend wasn't there with her. And with that thought in her mind, she pushed the blade to her skin and let the deep red blood flow from the incisions.

All she thought of was Erin, and how she'd be with her soon.

Jay and Hadley were waiting outside Erin's room.

It had been a while since they'd seen Hailey, she had dashed down the corridor almost fifteen minutes ago and they hadn't heard from her since.

Jay had texted her a couple times but no response, he walked over to her older sister.

"Hey have you heard from Hailey? It's been fifteen minutes and she's still in the bathroom isn't that kinda weird?" Jay asked Hadley, as the blonde gave him a sympathetic look before walking down the hallway.

She went into the bathrooms and as soon as she turned the corner she could see a pool of blood. Instantly all the colour washed out from her body and her face went pale.

"Hailey?" Hadley hoarsely whispered before pushing the door back to see a pale, colorless, almost dead Hailey.

Her heart got stuck in her throat, she instantly grabbed the wounds and put her sweatshirt over them to stop the bleeding.

"Jay!" she screamed hoping he could hear her. She slid down the wall next to her baby sister, sitting in her blood and smearing it all over herself.

Hadley was in a state of disbelief before she sobs started coming, in all the shock she forgot to check if Hailey was still warm. She felt for a pulse, it was the weakest pulse she had ever felt but it was there.

"It's gonna be okay Hails. I'm right here. Just hold on for me okay" Hailey needed to fight. Hadley wouldnt make it without her.

She kept the pressure on the wounds until she heard scrambling footsteps and a man turned the corner.

It was Jay. His face just washed from all its colour. His skin pale and his eyes bewildered as he eyed an almost dead Hailey and a strung out Hadley who was smeared in her sisters blood.

He was rooted to the spot for a second before he ran out. Hadley kept sobbing into her sisters limp, pale body.

Hoping that she still had enough fight left in her to make it.

She had to.

Jay ran out of the bathrooms and the image in his mind made him want to throw up and just crawl back into a hole and die.

His stomach churned as he turned a corner and grabbed Will.

"Hailey. Is in the bathroom. She slit her wrists and she's bleeding out I need help" Jay said quietly and Wills eyes flew open like saucers.

He grabbed a gurney and gauze from the cart outside the patient he was treating and ran to the bathrooms with Jay.

Inside the two brothers could see and smell the blood.

Once again, Jay felt the urgent need to throw up and just disappear. But he had to be there for Hadley, and he needed to fight for two of the three most important people in his life.

He helped Will and Hadley lift Haileys body onto the gurney before rushing her out of the bathrooms holding her wounds shut whilst Jay stood in his friends pool of blood.

Wondering where he went wrong.

His mind was racing and his heartbeat quickened. Breathing shallowed and eyes became blurry.

The overwhelming sense of fear overcame him as he sat on the floor next to the toilet and threw up everything in his system.

He sat in the bathroom stall and cried. His hands on his knees, he just cried. Loosing one of his best friends, and loosing his girlfriend in the same day. It was all too much to cope with. What if Hailey didn't make it?

Now they'd have to attend a double funeral for two of the best cops Chicago has ever seen.

Jay couldn't catch his breath, it was uneven and ragged. It reminded him of when he came back from the army and had panic attacks like this daily.

He tried to subdue the shaking and his breathing steadied slightly. He stood up, cleaned himself up and went back outside to see what had happened.

Forever ignoring his own feelings all because he was taught they weren't important.

Jay walked down the corridor into the hall where Erin and now Haileys room were. Inside Erin's room there were Antonio and Kim, talking to her and holding her hand with tears in their eyes.

Jay admired how much they cared for a minute before Will stepped out of the adjacent room. He put a hand in his brothers shoulders. Jay drew his breath.

Preparing for the worst. Preparing for those words of "I'm sorry. But there was nothing we could do" he was ready for that. Or at least he thought he was.

"She's going to make it" Will said with a smile as Jay exhaled sharply and dove into his big brothers chest for a hug.

Happy that at least Hailey was gonna be okay. But Erin, goddamnit. Why Erin? He had so much more to say to her.

Like the three letter word he always wanted to utter.

Looks like now he would never get the chance to truly tell her.
