It had been a couple days since Al's death and everyone was still walking on eggshells around Voight.
Erin and Jay on the other hand were rambunctious as they usually were, trying to keep the place alive a little.
Deep down Erin knew Hailey would crack at some point, Haileys older sister had come to visit her a couple times to make sure she was okay. Erin learnt that from those visits Hailey seemed great.
Which either meant she was really good at lying, or really was okay. Erin didn't try push it as she knew Hailey would only shut down on her.
Just like Jay did.
Erin loved Jay with everything in her. And things seemed to be going great so far. But Erin could tell Jay was detached. Distant. He seemed lost and although he promised her that he would try and communicate. Erin knew that she couldn't ask for so much so quickly. She had to let Jay come to her on his own.
With each passing day she became increasingly worried about him, he'd leave early but would come home with her at night. He wouldn't tell her where he went but he always came back as if nothing happened.
Erin wanted to be there for him like he was for her. But she didn't know how to do that yet without prying slightly into his personal business. Which she swore she'd never do. But his constant need for space and need to be distant was worrying.
Was she doing something wrong?
Was he rethinking this whole thing?
Was she not doing enough for him?
Was it her fault...?She tried to remove those questions from her mind as people were still running in and out of the office trying to track down Yates and McLeod. The warehouse was their last known and these sons of bitches are good. They go into hiding for god knows how long until it's deemed to be safe for them to reappear.
"Okay guys listen up!" Haileys sister Hadley called from the front.
Her FBI office had been doing well in Chicago. She had moved here permanently with Hailey and recently got promoted to Sergeant Upton. Which was pretty damn cool.
"This is so much more than a shootout now. It's killings. Rapes, murders. You name it. But this time, this young girl. Amy-Rose Richard, 15. Was targeted and raped. But she survived. She's in the interrogation room right now. This isn't the same MO but from what she's said it seems linked. She saw the same car that we saw at the location of the warehouse. I'm going to have a crack at her, Hailey, Halstead and Lindsay I might need you guys to stick around. The rest of you. Back to work" Hadley was very authoritative. Good sergeant material.
Hank and Liv both seemed to be quite fond of her moving up the ranks so quickly. The older Upton sister sat in the interrogation room with her younger sister by her side. The girl in front of them was frail and scared. She didn't do anything more than shiver and shake even though she had many many layers on. It was probably from the shock.
"Hey Amy-Rose, its Hadley. Do you remember me from the car ride? This is my sister Hailey, she's a detective. We want to help you okay?" Hadley was convincing.
She was a damn good interrogator. Incredible manipulator and she was an expert at making up stuff to get offenders to flip. But also equally talented in situations like this, making people feel safe.
Jay and Erin watched the two sisters comfort the scared girl. Trying to get some info out of her. Until Kim came in.
"We have another victim. DOA. She had a singular gunshot wound to the abdomen. We finally got some ballistics to run to hopefully get a print match. Let's hope that these assholes don't start raping and killing girls because they couldn't get to you" Kim's voice was grim. The tension was high.
Hopefully ballistics would pull through and they'd finally get a set of prints to add to their evidence file.
Erin zoned out of Hailey and Hadleys conversation before tuning back in.
"Do you remember anything about today?"
"I don't remember much. I just, when can I shower?" Hadleys face softened. She understood what the girl meant.
"You want to wash his touch off and feel clean again don't you?" Hadley knew she was exposing herself right now. But she didn't have any other choice. She wanted to do this.
"You know, I was raped when I was your age too. Twice. The first time was when I was 11, last time when I was 19 and finally started standing up for myself. And I remember so vividly. I'd shower up to three times a day to get his touch off me so I could feel clean. It's almost like I didn't want to be in my own body. My own skin felt dirty and used. I felt like a battered, dead body. I understand you okay. But we just wanna help. Can we do that?" Haileys expression softened at her sisters revelations.
She vaguely remembered Hadley telling another victim about her past. But not in such detail. Hailey was in constant awe of how strong and resilient her sister was in the face of everything thrown at her.
"I remember I was down by the River Walk. I was walking home when I saw a burgundy coloured car come out of no where. This guy came out of it, he was wearing jeans and a blue t-shirt. He had black hair. I mean he was good looking. Then he grabbed me, I fought back as hard as I could but then he..." Amy's voice trailed off as she started to tear up. Hadley reassured the girl as everyone was now dumbfounded with everything that had just happened.
Erin didn't know any better so she just closed the door and wrapped her arms around Jays waist.
Longing for his touch.
Longing for a sense of comfort that she wanted so badly.Even in that moment where she could feel the love in their embrace. She didn't really accept it to be true. Jay loved her, she knew that much.
But why was he acting like she wasn't herself. And why wasn't he acting like himself. This isn't normal. Erin thought to herself before shutting everything off to savor the moment.
Not knowing that it might be her last one for a very long time.
