Chapter Thirty Seven

The unit rolled up to this little random cabin in the middle of the woods just outside of Chicago.

It was a small cabin, would be a perfect place to keep drugs, kids or guns. They sat outside the house in their cars for what seemed like hours, Jay and Erin sat at the front of the cabin.

Hailey, Kim and Adam at the back, Voight and Antonio on the West and Al, Emmy and Hadley sat on the East.

There had been no movement since they got there which was at least 16 hours of just waiting in the car.

"I'm so confused, what are we doing? Why don't we just go in?" Erin whined as Jay continued to look around with his binoculars.

"Because Voight said we needed photo evidence and because we have no idea what is waiting in there for us. There could be bombs, traps or whatever really. This guy is a psycho" Jay said bluntly before continuing to take random photos with his camera to pass the time.

"Yeah but that's stupid, why would we do" Erin was cut off by Jay pushing her down in the seat and covering her mouth. She squirmed and fought trying to get away.

"Erin stop moving. Someone is outside" Jay said and Erin's eyes flew open. Shit.

"Voight, we have movement on the front of the house. We don't know who it is, we're trying to keep our cover" she keyed her radio.

"Okay just stay there, we'll come around quietly on foot" Antonio said into the radio as Jay and Erin tried to sit up a little to see who was outside.

Low and behold, of course, Johnny was smoking a cigarette on the front porch.

Erin's mind wandered, where would he hide those kids. She didn't have much time to think before she heard footsteps and someone knock on the window.

Jay jolted, he seemed paranoid or scared. Erin grabbed his hand and he relaxed a little. She turned to the window and saw Voight and Antonio standing outside.

"There's another vehicle here. Just don't make a sound. Watch what happens, get evidence. Then when this vehicle leaves, breach" Voight said as he turned to key his radio again.

"Guys we have a suspicious vehicle on the east side of the cabin, get evidence. Then tail it. We'll take it from here" He said as he got a bunch of 10-4 replies and agreements before sitting quietly near Jay and Erin's ute.

They waited before the vehicle sped off, Hadley, Al and Emmy hot on its tail.

"We got photos and evidence. Go now!" Hadley said into the radio before the rest of the team went and surrounded the cabin. Voight gave the signal and Kevin busted down the door.

"Chicago PD!" was echoed throughout the cabin before they heard footsteps outside. Erin didn't think twice before she turned around, ran and fired her weapon.

Hitting the runaway twice in the back, he stumbled to the ground before pushing himself up.

He didn't run very far as Jay and Antonio had already tackled him to the ground. They turned him over. Bam it was their target.

"Where is she" Jay spat.

"Who?" Johnny said with a cackle before Jay tightened his grip on Johnny's bullet wound. Causing him to scream out in pain. Erin flinched at the sound. Unable to shake the bad feeling from her gut, before she let herself wander too close.

Kim and Haileys screams were heard from the house and Erin darted in her direction.

"What happened?!" Erin said as she ran back into the cabin.

"Hails? Kim? Guys where are you?" Erin screamed around the cabin before she found a door behind the fridge that was open, she ran down the stairs to find three bodies on the ground. She ran over to the smallest girl and felt for a pulse. There was one but it was really weak, they had to get her to Med now.

"Her pulse is really faint. We need to go now, are those two alive?" Erin asked as she cradled the tiny body in her arms. Hadley Mae was alive, barely. But she was holding on. Her breathing was slow and ragged.

"This one has a really strong pulse but injuries to the neck and chest. I can't tell where the bleeding is coming from" Hailey said as she leant over the body of a maybe eight year old girl.

"He's gone. Gunshot to the chest. Right through his heart" Kim said as she picked the boy up and all three girls carried the children out to their cars.

The boys rushed over and opened the doors, soon enough tire squeals were heard and the officers were heading to Med with two critical children.

Jay held Erin's hand while he drove, Erin held back but had one arm around Hadley Mae's body.

It was cold, her pulse was weak but the thing about being dead. Is that you have to be warm.

Erin knew that so was trying to get her to fight as hard as she could. The drive to Med seemed like it took hours before they all pulled up and ran inside with the children.

"We have two tender age children, one with lacerations to the face and chest. One with no apparent injuries but cold and weak pulse" Hailey said as the three girls ran into the ED.

Met by Dr Rhodes and Dr Halstead. Who looked at Erin sympathetically when he took Hadley from her arms. Erin stopped him by grabbing his wrist.

"This is our kid. Do everything you can for her" Erin said as Will nodded to signify he understood and took her into a room in the back. Erin's hand shook as she wrapped her arms around her two best friends for some comfort before the boys ran in.

"Is she gonna be okay?" Jay asked worriedly as Erin wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her head into his chest.

She knew she was safe there, and he didn't argue. Because he knew he was safe with her too.
