Chapter Twenty Seven

"Go for Ruzek" Adam said as he answered the phone ringing on his desk.

He thankfully was allowed to come back to work after his kidney transplant but was on strict desk duty for at least two weeks which he grumbled about to everyone.

"Hey Adam, it's Will. Can you pass me to Jay?" The older Halstead asked.

"Sorry he's busy right now" Adam lied into the phone while shrugging at his coworkers.

The truth was Jay had yet another violent outburst.

Erin was the only one that could get through to him when he was like that. Completely incoherent.

Everyone understood the complexity of Erin and Jays relationship right now, but then again they all knew that Erin was the only person in the whole world. That trusted Jay as much as he trusted her.

It was their thing, they'd try push each other away, one not wanting the others company and the other ignoring them and joining. They'd talk, drink beer. Hook up and then in the morning they were fine again. But ever since Erin had gotten back from her so called sabbatical. Their dynamic changed, the love in their eyes was the purest anyone had ever seen it be.

Intelligence lost Jay for months after Erin left, the only person he talked to wasn't even his best friend. It was Hailey. Hailey who was, is now Erin's best friend.

The pair would meet at Molly's well after midnight. They'd share a beer, stay for a couple hours then Hailey would take off again. Jay didn't know where she went and knew better than to try and force her to say anything.

So instead he kept to himself, spent a fair bit of time with Kim as well. Trying to keep his mind from wandering too far.

Voight also kept a close eye on the detective, trying to stop him from digging a hole that was just too deep. The same hole Erin had dug all those months ago just turned into her grave.

Jay and Voight had many conversations, including the one where Hank told the young man that he'd be taking over Intelligence one day. Much to his surprise.

Adams mind had wandered too far already. He thanked Will for the information he had just received, hung up the phone and went to go find Erin and Jay.

He was slightly startled to see Jay on the floor with Erin's arms wrapped around him. He had been crying.

Adam's expression instantly softened, he felt for his friend.

Adam and Kim's baby Jules, had been in an accident. Which wasn't even close to kidnapping and torture. But Adam understood why Jay acted out like he did. He was only just trying to protect his daughter.

The daughter he had only found out about like two weeks ago when his now girlfriend, previous ex brought it up.

Adam was pissed at Erin for hiding it, but he couldn't stay mad at them when Jay was breaking down and Erin was trying her hardest not to do the same.

"Hey guys got a sec" Adam asked the couple. Erin looked up at him before Adam caught a glimpse of Jays expression.

It was so far from the usual sassy flirty Jay. This expression was one he had never seen before on his friend. His eyes were completely cold and dead, his face pale like snow but his eyes red and puffy from all the crying.

Adam then looked over at Erin, she wasn't anywhere near as pale or frail as Jay was right now.

"Yeah whats up" Erin said softly.

"I just got news from Med, Haileys taken a turn for the better. She's been moved into an isolation room and she's still on the monitors but they've successfully taken her off ECMO" Erin's heart burst. She had never been so happy in her life to hear those words. She could practically kiss Adam and everyone at Med right now for saving her best friend.

Jays expression was still unreadable, bur sensing the tension he just cupped Erin's face with one hand and smiled at her.

"Can we see her then?" Erin asked her friend.

"Yeah we can" Adam said with a soft smile.

"Roman and Antonio are with them at the hospital right now. We can go if you want, we're all heading there anyways" Adam offered to his friends. They looked at each other before agreeing to head to Med.

Jay felt sick. All the crying had taken it out of him. He couldn't see straight and everyone's voices sounded like they were put through a time warp or something.

He saw what looked like Adam walk in and he remembered Erin was there because she talked to him. He couldn't make out voices clearly but Erin's came out of her mouth as clear as day. She pulled him off his feet and tried to make him stand before his legs gave out and the next thing he knew. Black.

Erin tried to stand wirh Jay to go to Med and check on Hailey. But the second he stood up his eyes rolled back into his head and he fainted.

"Jay?" Erin's voice was full of worry. He wasn't responding or breathing.

"Adam I need an ambo he's unresponsive. Jay?!" Erin screamed out. He wasn't moving, wasn't breathing nothing.

"Jay!" Erin screamed again in between chokes. Adam joined next to Erin and put a fist to Jays chest rubbing hard, and Jays breath caught but he still didn't wake up or show any signs of consciousness. Erin was just happy that he was breathing.

She cradled him in her lap for a while before the ambo arrived, Gabby and Brett ran into the locker room.

"We tried to stand him up to take him to Med to see Hailey, but his eyes just rolled into the back of his head and he fainted" Erin said with a croaky voice.

"Do you know if he's on anything, or if he's taken anything in the last couple hours?" Gabby asked Erin. And Erin tried to think, did she really know so little about her partner.

"I don't know" was all she could mutter before they loaded Jay into the ambo and headed to Med.

Ironic that they were trying to go there already.
