The next day you sleepily got ready for school, grabbing some fresh clothes from your drawers and pulling them on with faint exhaustion. Good thing Michael helped you organise your things, otherwise shifting through boxes early this morning just to find clothes would be extremely tedious. Still...Stifling a yawn, you finished getting dressed and then swiftly brushed your hair, spraying deodorant under your arms before snatching up your backpack. There. Now all you needed to do was grab some cereal and then walk to school. So that's what you decided to do, pouring a little bit of cereal and then milk into a bowl before sitting down at the table.
"How'd you sleep, (Y/n)...?" Your mother kindly asked, entering the kitchen not long after you did and switching the kettle on.
"I slept alright. How about you, Mom?" You politely inquired, not finding your cereal to be particularly exciting or delicious.
"Oh, just fine, thanks darling. Though I did dream of a guy in a Christmas sweater. Perhaps that's a sign Christmas is coming early, hey?" Your mother laughed it off, her comment causing you to giggle too and not think anything of it.
"Haha, maybe." Dipping your head as a nod, you swiftly finished your breakfast and placed your bowl in the sink, tightening your hold on your backpack firmly.
"Are you sure, you don't need me to walk you to school...?" Your mom offered pleasantly.
"I'm good. Bye Mom." You declined her invitation casually, giving her a wave before opening the front door and turning to leave.
"Morning, (Y/n)." Michael greeted in a friendly tone, his sudden appearance causing you to jump straight out of the blue. "Want to walk to school together today?"
"O-Oh...Good morning, Michael." You responded with surprise, flashing him a warm smile a second or two afterwards. "I'm sorry, you threw me off for a moment there. But sure! I'd love to walk to school with you."
"Awesome." The blonde boy grinned, giving you a hug once you'd agreed to his offer.
Smiling, you wrapped your arms around him in return and repeated the gesture; pleased by Michael's kindhearted embrace. "So how'd you sleep last night...? Everything go alright...?"
"I guess..." Michael awkwardly mumbled, his face heating up after you'd hugged back and asked him such an empathetic question. "I...I missed you though."
"I was only gone for one night, how could you've missed me...?" You laughed lightly, finding his remark to be rather heartwarming.
"I just...really like hanging out with you..." He spoke sheepishly, breaking the hug to hold your hand and begin walking.
"Believe me, the feeling's mutual." You softly told him, squeezing his hand and feeling relatively relaxed. "If it wasn't for you, I'd probably still be shut off from the world."
"Really...?" Michael asked in surprise, tilting his head slightly while he sent you a shocked glance. "I-It...I mean, it's just that, you seem so nice and friendly. I...I wouldn't have guessed that you'd shut people off as well."
"And I'm surprised that you do too, all things considered. You just seem so...so cool and stuff." You shyly replied, pink colouring your cheeks as you gazed down at the ground - feeling embarrassed. "So I guess we both learnt something about each other today."
"Believe me, (Y/n), I am not cool." He chuckled in amusement, shaking his head and finding your compliment entertaining.
"Are too!"
"Am not!"
"Are too!"
"Am not!"
"Are not!"
"Am too! ...Hey, wait a minute—""Haha! I win!" You smugly smirked, flashing him a mischievous wink and nudging his side playfully. "Better luck next time~"
"You are completely and utterly evil." Michael complained childishly, nudging you back and fake-pouting.
"Nah, you're just salty." You angelically hummed, sticking your tongue out and finding your current exchange between you both to be especially funny. "Or is it that you knew I was going to win in the first place~?"
"Hey, I...I let you win that." He fired back, coming up with an excuse on the spot and causing you to giggle.
"I'm sure you did." You teased sarcastically, noticing that you'd both arrived at the school's entrance. "~I'm sure you did."
"You are something else." Michael commented devilishly, grinning like earlier whilst he entered the building's front doors with you - both of you now heading through the hallway.
"I guess I'll see you in class then." You cheerfully told him - giving your friend a happy-go-lucky wave before going to go open your locker.
Well, that was until your new "friend" grasped your wrist and tugged you back a little bit; his face instantly clouding over with dark confusion and unexpected hurt. "Where are you going? Don't you want to keep walking together?" Michael slowly questioned, his sharp-blue orbs now spiralling into deep oceans of darkness.
"I um...I was just going to grab my things from my locker." You explained bashfully, suddenly feeling somewhat skittish and timid. "Y'know, before class starts...? Shouldn't you do the same thing...?"
"Oh...yeah." Without any warning whatsoever, the blonde boy's expression swiftly cleared - his random outburst shattering into splinters as he reverted back to his regular frame of mind. "I don't care about grabbing new notebooks from my locker though. I don't do enough work to fill them up anyway."
"You don't care about any of our classes...?" You wonderingly quizzed - swivelling around to face him fully.
"Nah." Shaking his head offhandedly, he shrugged - acting like he hated not only the kids that attended here, but the teachers in this school too. Had something happened though? Was it Haddonfield Elementary School that was the problem here?
"You don't even like Art class...?" You asked in despair, grasping at straws and trying your hardest to cheer him up.
"Art class is cool, I guess." Michael quietly agreed, his response making you release a sigh of relief. At least there was something that he enjoyed. "It gives me a chance to ignore the others...completely."
"Oh..." Not knowing how to respond, you bit your lip and fell silent - Michael hurriedly sensing how uncomfortable he'd made you.
"Hey, I have an idea. Why don't you show me where your locker is? That way, we can always walk through the hallway together." Michael brightly suggested, his positive attitude throwing you off and surprising you.
"Um, sure. It's right over there - the last one in the row, tucked next to the square pillar." You pointed out hesitantly, trying your hardest to forget about his mood-swing from before.
But it was just so...just so confusing. After all, hadn't you only gone to go and grab a few things for class? Why on Earth would Michael make such a big deal out of that? Were you overthinking things? Should you give your new friend the benefit of the doubt and carry on with the fun banter you and him were having? Because the last couple of days had been extremely fun so far - especially when Michael came over and stayed for dinner. Perhaps his mood-swing was...was natural for a ten-year-old. Yeah...You probably shouldn't judge him. So, once you'd taken a deep breath in and then out, you forced a smile - not wanting anything to change between you two.
