"It was Dr. Loomis. It was him the whole time.
"—After you went to find Lindsey, Dr. Loomis grabbed Laurie - abducting us both. He took us into the basement of the Myers' house and explained that he was the one that let Michael out. Michael isn't in Haddonfield - Dr. Loomis just made that up. His plan was to kill both of us for his new book and then use Michael as a scapegoat."
"—Loomis was completely insane. He even made me watch Laurie die - it was horrible.""I know, I know, but...but I just needed time to recover from that. Please understand." Tears glistened at the edges of your eyes as you begged for him to see things from your point of view, knowing how hard it would be to convince him. "I mean, I was shell-shocked, Dad. I had to watch a friend die. I...I was assaulted by someone I trusted. I've seen things that I would do anything to un-see. Hell, I couldn't even think straight until yesterday. It was...It was hard."
"Still...What made you think that teaming up with someone you barely knew was a good idea...!?" He fired back, sighing from despair and exasperation. "What made you think that you'd escape entirely unharmed!?"
"What are you talking about...?" You asked in confusion, surprise fluttering across your face whilst you suddenly realised what he was referring to. "You mean my shoulder? Oh, I only received that injury because I—"
But anxiety and rage took hold, making you try your body-slamming plan again. And again. And again. It didn't matter that your arm was bruised and stinging, it didn't matter that you were upset, and it didn't matter that it might not work. You weren't giving up.
"I~am~NOT~staying~here~!" You chanted after each attempt, tears slithering down your face once more while you fought the pain. These were physical-pain tears rather than emotional tears; but it's not like that was much better. After the last word however, the door actually broke; causing you to fall into the hallway of this abandoned "Myers" house with nothing more than a bloody shoulder. It...It worked...Wait, it worked!
"—I acted recklessly, that's all."
"You know that's not just what I meant." Your stepfather responded seriously, switching the subject back to your rash decision and therefore turning your attention to what truly crossed your mind while you momentarily broke free from the Myers house.
"It...It was because he seemed to know more about my past than I did. Dr. Loomis wrote a book about Haddonfield's dark history - about what happened fifteen years ago - and why my mother left this town. The book's called "The Devil's Eyes", or something along those lines." You explained as best as you could, blurring the truth a little in the process. "Why don't I go and fetch it for you? I checked it out from the library a few days ago, it's still in my bedroom. I can go and get it for you if you'd like."
"Uh, sure..." He seemed unsure, his temper subsiding slightly as he started to see things from your point of view - like why you acted the way you had.
"Be right back...!" Once you'd sent him a soft smile, you left the living room and headed into your bedroom; your eyes widening with astonishment right after. What the—?
"—Michael...! Wh-What are you doing in here...!?" You scolded fiercely, your voice no more than a worried whisper as you raised a finger to your lips. "You said you were going to stay out of sight, but this is a terrible hiding spot...! I mean, what if my younger sister Gabby and Ali had decided to talk in here, instead of heading over to her apartment...!? This was insanely careless, and I know you're not usually this careless. So why...? Why would you think that here was a good place to—"
Before you could finish, the white-masked male immediately moved closer; his eyes overflowing with anger whilst he stood only a few inches in front of you. You frowned from bewilderment, not understanding his reasons in the slightest. It's not like you were in any danger. It's not as if your father was going to raise a hand against you or anything. And - thanks to Alina - Gabby wouldn't have to know about the horrifying events of this past week. Most of your family were safe. All you had to do now was learn why your Mom didn't show up. Perhaps she was busy or something? Shaking your head, you brushed your overthinking to the side and looked Michael right in the eye - quietly demanding an answer from the stalker standing across from you.
Seconds trickled past, the mute killer still not pulling out his notepad or bothering to answer any of your previous questions. But in the end...he didn't have to. His actions answered them for you. The stiff way he was standing. The furious frustration that swirled between his eyes. The strangely tight hold he seemed to have on his sharp kitchen knife. He wasn't hiding out in your bedroom just because of anger, or jealousy. It wasn't even because of his obsessive nature. So, reaching out, you moved your finger down from your lips and gently grasped the wrist Michael was gripping his weapon with, suddenly understanding his true intentions.
"...I'm sorry." You spoke soothingly, shooting him a tender-hearted smile and doing your best to calm him down somehow. "You're not the one being careless. You're not the one being careless at all. That was a stupid thing to say. So...I'm sorry."
While you paused for a moment, Michael's rage slowly subsided; his anger bubbling down once you'd managed to warmly console him. So much so, in fact, that he dropped his knife - the weapon falling to the floor and soundlessly hitting the bedroom carpet. He was so pleased by your words that he actually flung his arms around you, hauling you into a tremendously strong hug and hiding his concealed face directly in the middle of your hair. But you knew why the killer was behaving so...so sporadically. You knew exactly why. And you couldn't let him stay this way. At least, not for now. This...This wasn't natural.
"What you're doing isn't careless. I mean, I can't say it's the most logical thing to do, but to be perfectly honest, I'm pretty grateful." You told your partner with an affectionate expression; not wanting him to think you were lying or telling untruths. "Because I know you. I know you wouldn't use my bedroom as an acceptable hiding place. You stayed here because you were scared. You stayed here because you were concerned over how my conversation was going with my Dad."
Michael didn't move, but his grip on you tightened, his reaction to your words confirming that what you'd just said was correct. He'd purposely placed himself at risk of being found out and caught. He'd purposely acted irrationally and irresponsibly. But he'd done it all because he was concerned. He was worried over how you'd feel about the upcoming news. He was waiting to make sure you wouldn't become too hurt by the end of it all. And to you, that couldn't possibly be classed as careless. To you, that was more considerate than careless. And when you thought about it that way, you thought back to one of the times when Michael had first shown genuine compassion.
"Michael—?!"
"Hey, (Y/n). Are you, um...Are you walking to school with anyone today?"
"Oh, uh...No, I wasn't." "Would you like to walk to school together...?"
"Yeah...!"
—
"I also have a younger sister. Her name's Angel, but I call her "Boo"."
"That's adorable."
"I have a photo of her. Do you wanna see?"
"Sure! I bet she's really cute."
—
"Aww, what a cute baby!"
"Thanks."
"No worries, just telling the truth."
"You're really nice."
"Oh, thank you." "That's really sweet of you to say."
"I guess I'll see you in class then."
—
"Hey, (Y/n)...?"
"Oh, hey there, Michael." "What's up...?"
"I was just wondering if...if you'd like to spend lunchtime together...?"
"That sounds great."
—
The Michael you used to know hadn't deteriorated over time. His personality and character traits had clearly changed, but overall, he hadn't disappeared. Dr. Loomis had been wrong all along. And so had his book.
