Half an hour later
Lindsey ran all the way to the front desk, car keys clanging in his pockets, sweat dripping down his body. "Stevie, I'm here to see Stevie. Stephanie Lynn Nicks," he said breathlessly. The woman at the desk raised an eyebrow, but spoke softly,"Who are you?"
"Lindsey Buckingham."
"Oh goodness, you're-"
"In a band yes I know, where the fuck is my- I mean where is Stevie?"
The woman seemed hurt by his harsh words. "Sorry, I, just, where is she? Please tell me."
"Room 2, just straight down and the first on your right." She sighed. He darted to the room, and stumbled in, kneeling to catch his breath. "Linds?" He heard her beautiful voice inquire. "I'm here Steph, I'm here baby." He moved to kneel by her bedside, kissing her hand, both of them temporarily unaware of anyone else in the room. He was terrified by how she looked, he couldn't believe in a god if something like this could happen to someone like her. An oxygen mask lay on her neck, to be replaced soon after. Stitched cuts appeared countlessly over the once soft skin he had touched so many times. Her eye nearest to him- closed now, as her breathing slowed and she fell back to sleep- displayed a plump, purple ring, that looked like it would be painful to even breathe heavily on. "She's gonna be ok." Said a voice behind Lindsey, and momentarily he fell out of the spell Stevie had cast on him, turning. "She better be, or they will be hell to pay. What happened?"
"It was a complete accident. Someone pulled out too soon, and they hit the back of Stevie's car."
"Why was she driving? She hasn't drove since she quit her waiting job on New Year's Eve in 1974." Chris smiled slightly at Lindsey's excellent recall of detail in regards to his sister. "I'm not sure, maybe she was feeling wild, you know how she is."
"I do." Lindsey moved to sit by Chris' side, his eyes never leaving Stevie's now almost motionless body. "Where's your mom?"
"She went home to sleep, Stevie insisted after she'd stayed with her all night."
"All night?! She's been here since yesterday?"
"With all due respect Lindsey why would we call you straight away? You're not Stevie's husband or boyfriend anymore, you've got a family to look after."
"You know nothing about us. What if she'd died?"
"Just quiet down Lindsey, you only mess her around nowadays, and i don't like it! A married man calling his ex-girlfriend 'baby' for god's sake, it's tasteless!"
"She told me to- I- Don't go there Chris you have no idea about our situation."
"I know enough to remember that the year before last you and Stevie were all over each other, and then came your child of a girlfriend and baby out of nowhere."
"Get lost Chris, I'm not in the mood." Chris stormed out of the room, and Lindsey sat with his head in his hands, wondering what to do next.
