I jumped into the car instantly, reversing and swinging out of the drive. My heart was beating out of its chest and I felt bile rising in my mouth. About ten minutes, twenty notches over the speed limit, and many angry beeps came between me and Stevie. It was dark out now. I left the keys in the car and ran into the house calling for her. I heard her shout weakly from the upstairs bathroom, and darted up to find her. The image I saw shattered my heart into a thousand pieces. She was doubled over by the wall, scrabbling for something to hold on to. "Lin- Lind-" she gasped, tears falling over ones already dried to her cheeks. "It's ok baby, I love you, it's ok." I ran to take her in my arms like one would cradle a child. The wet, hot blood seeping from her dress soaking through my white shirt. I took her to the car, kissing her head several times and repeating my assurances despite the tears that were now freely flowing from my eyes too. Lying her on the back seat as comfortably as possible, ringing the hospital and hastily told them of the state Stevie was in: all while grasping her hand with one of mine as I drove as carefully as possible giving the situation. "I'm here Steph, I'm here."
