"So, what did the doctor say?"
"Oh nothing." I blurted, "Just that the injuries are getting better, I should be out within the next few days."
"Brilliant," he beamed at me, sitting in the chair beside my bed and taking my hand. I pulled away, "Charlotte?"
"No, she doesn't know."
"What a surprise."
"I said everything, I just referred to you as a friend!"
"We're anything but friends Lindsey."
He sighed, "What are we then?"
"Fuck knows...But she didn't ask? She doesn't care who you were with?"
"She probably guessed, but knowing her she'll only want to bring it up as a guilt trip if we fight."
"Great marriage." I said snakily, taking a gulp from my cup, wishing I could've been something a little stronger. "Thirsty?" He said, avoiding the subject of his husk of a relationship. "No, just bored."
"How could you be bored with me around?"
"You'd be surprised darling!" I laughed a little.
"Listen Stevie," he began in a more serious tone, "I need you to know th-" the door bursting open interrupted him. "Lindsey!" Gushed my mom as she entered, hugging him on sight. "Oh hello Barbra, it's good to see you." I knew Lindsey wasn't lying to save face like most guys, he really did get along with mother. "You too sweetheart, I'm so glad you're here, see Stephanie! What did I say?"
"What did she say Steph?" He said grinning at me.
"Nothing you don't already know," I said truthfully- he was fully aware of my mother's lifelong effort of trying to get us back together. In fact, she was the only one who knew almost everything about what we had been through the good and the terrible. This time I felt alone however, as she was oblivious to my pregnancy along with the rest of the world, give my doctor.
"How come you're early mom?" I asked, trying my best to appear cheery though I couldn't fool Lindsey who had just seen me in a grump.
"I couldn't stand pottering around the house waiting for Christopher to pick me up after work, so I caught a few buses, all my friends do!" Me and Lindsey cackled. "You caught a bus in LA?!" He said.
"How did you not get lost mom? It must be like six changeovers from my house to here!"
"Well I did get a little confused, but a kind young man helped me with the map. There needs to be more young men like that around nowadays!"
"Are you a cougar Barbra?"
"Lindsey you cheeky boy!" She lightly slapped his wrist and we all hissed with laughter, collectively remembering the time we'd thought my mom was dead because she'd caught the wrong train to the other side of San Francisco.
"Actually," she said straightening up,"I'll just call Chris to let him know, where is the pay phone in this place?"
"No idea," Lindsey admitted,"Do you want me to ask at the desk for you?"
"I'm fine sweetie, you two talk." She left. Lindsey simply took my hand again and I didn't want to resist this time. "What did you wanna say Linds?"
"I just need you to know that I love you, and I'm here for you whenever, in sickness and in health."
"We're not married, silly!"
"Nope, I wish!" I gave him a warning look, but my eyes gave away my satisfaction.
"I...Lindsey there's something I need you to know too."
"Is it bad? Are you gonna be ok?" He said worriedly.
"It's not bad, but it's difficult, and things are going to change because of it- that's if you want them too anyway..."
"Huh, Steph?" He stroked my palm.
"I'm pregnant...And they can't be anyones' but yours Lindsey."
