Bright-eyed kid

I pulled up in the drive and entered the hallway with a little trepidation. This was it- my marriage would be as good as over the next time I touched that door handle- if it wasn't already. "Charlotte?" I said as I peered into the kitchen. "Lindsey?" I heard someone call from upstairs. I tracked back to the staircase and heard the call again, it was her. "Here." I replied.
"I'm just in the bath honey."
"Uh...Ok," after my afternoon with Stevie, it felt especially alien hearing her call me that. I knew she wouldn't be too suspicious that I showed no interest in joining her though, and I walked to find Will in his playpen on his bedroom floor. "Hey there Will," I greeted, sitting down cross legged as if I was the child. "Daddy!" He wrapped his arms around my neck and I chuckled. "So what have you been doing little fella?"
"Car!" He said laughing and placing a tiny red vehicle in my hand. Not for the first time I was amazed by his incredible gentleness, and imagined how brilliant he was sure to be as an older brother. I wondered if some or all of my other children might grow to have the same piercing, blue eyes that Will surely got from me.
"Ah! We have ourselves a future F1 driver I see!" He raised an eyebrow in what I perceived as slight confusion, and his obliviousness amused me. "How apt!" I heard Charlotte add behind me as she waltzed in, wrapped in a towel robe, the smell of fruity shampoo and bubble bath overwhelming the room.
"Huh?"
"John's riff?"
"I'll play in a minute Will," I said with a slight twang of guilt, fluffing his hair. "Charlotte we need to talk."
