Jason
It was my second time saying goodbye to Blossom like this, but Alyssa? This was emotional for me on a whole new level.
"Hey come here." I told Alyssa who rolled her eyes.
"I wanna keep up with Blossom. I'm gonna lose her."
"Blossom!" I said out loud, grabbing a few students' attention. I put my index finger in the air to tell her to stop, a warning and order she obeyed..
"If something happens, find Blossom and tell her, okay? Blossom and I have a deal."
"Okay, whatever."
"Alyssa I'm not playing. Do you hear me?"
"I do hear you, daddy." She sarcastically confirmed. "Just let me start my day here."
I bit the inside of my cheek and glared at her. "Fine. Go with Blossom to your classroom and have a nice day, okay? I love you."
"Bye."
My daughter ran up to Blossom who threw her arm around Alyssa's shouldera, stroking her hair a bit. Blossom had adjusted to the sister relationship very well ever since I instructed her to ease it onto Alyssa.
The girls turned the corner and I sighed to myself, letting go wasn't easier when Alyssa herself was running out of my arms. I spun around and began walking the other way, the same hallway I entered only minutes ago. It was a big building and I was starting to worry about how the girls were ever gonna find their way around the school.
Alyssa
"In here?" I asked Blossom once again, just to be sure. "And your classroom is only across the hall?"
Blossom sighed, not even laughing at me as she was growing tired. "Yes, you fool. Just go inside and it'll work out just fine. It's only for an hour and a half. Then we'll meet again."
"Why weren't we twins? I wanna be in your class so bad."
Blossom rolled her eyes. "Bye. I'm leaving."
My sister seemed perfectly fine with entering a room full of other teenagers who were obviously about to be judgemental and competitive. Why wasn't I fine with it? I know that she had done this once before for only a couple of weeks and that couldn't have changed her completely, could it? Or was it just a front she put up to make me feel safe? Because I wasn't feeling safe.
I opened the door and tried to grasp the attention of a teacher but no one was in my sight. "Excuse me?" I whispered to a pretty looking girl in the front. "Is there a teacher here?"
"This is reading club. Ain't no teacher over here."
My heart sunk. "What? So I'm not supposed to be here? This isn't my class?"
I was getting a few burning stares from dedicated book club members. "Shh!"
"It's not a class, baby girl. It's a club. You're in the wrong class. But you can always sign up this club."
"Thanks." I said quietly, waved her goodbye and left the room.
Looking down on the paper I was given by the assistant principle, I realized that Blossom had told me about the wrong room. It was the room next to the book club.
Now my nerves were building up again. I had gotten some empowering senses from walking in on everyone reading. I had already done this once before so it shouldn't have been nervous at all.
Wrapping my fingers around the handle, I took a deep breath and just opened it up. I felt a bit exposed and easily targetted.
"Alyssa! We have been expecting you." A lady with a slick pony tail on her head exclaimed.
"I got lost a bit."
A few kids snickered.
"Let's introduce ourselves for Alyssa. Mariah can start, thank you."
The teacher, who still didn't have a name in my world, seemed like she liked to switch and blend the elements of jokes and fun with seriousness, education and status.
"Hi Alyssa. My name's Mariah and I love watching movies and also... Um, I'd say I enjoy walking my dog, yeah."
"Hanna?" Ms Seriousness assigned another girl the same task that Mariah had gotten.
"Hey, Alyssa. My name's Hanna and for some reason I really like reading and writing. And music, I spend a lot of time with my earphones in my ears, basically."
"I love music, too." I smiled.
"Really?" Hanna smiled. "What kind of music?"
"Anything from rap to the poppier songs that are being played on radio."
I didn't even realize that our conversation was branching and that everyone else waited for their moment of introducing themselves.
"Okay, Hanna and Alyssa. That's enough."
Then she kept going until I had been informed by these kids what they liked and what their parents named them. Not too interesting to me.
"What about you?" Hanna smiled from the first row. "What are your hobbies?"
I accepted her curious question with a slight nod and thought for a second. "I like being with my sister. Her name's Blossom. And I like listening to music and reading books. Back in Miami I used to-"
"Miami?" A couple of kids loudly questioned in shock.
"I'm from Miami, yes."
Hanna smiled and looked at the teacher. "Ms West?"
"Yes, Hanna?"
"Remember the work we did on Miami a couple of weeks back? About the criminal worlds?"
"I do. Alyssa you're very welcome to take a seat."
Ms West went on and on about something completely different, something that didn't have anything to do with what was on my mind. She didn't even notice Hanna and I in the front, still in a tense and suspenseful discussion. Hanna was sharing the things she remembered from that one time she studied about different gangs and dangerous places in Miami, also certain groups or businesses.
"You said your sister's name is Blossom, right?"
"Very true."
"Well I remember something from the Businesses. I think one of them were called Blossom. I remember that I thought it was a waste of a pretty name."
"Blossom? Really? In Miami?"
"I'm a hundred percent that's accurate."
"That's so scary but still pretty interesting. I'll have to ask my dad when I get home."
"You do so."
