"Tell me about Alvaro's case," Atty. Vermo, our professor, shuffled the index cards right after he settled his things down on the table. He stopped, reading a name out loud. "Racelis, Riley. Stand up."

Napatingin ang lahat sa akin nag-aabang. Tumayo na ako at huminga ng malalim kahit pa bumabara na hanggang baga ko ang kaba.

"Alvaro was found guilty of murder by the Trial Court of Elysian City, with evident premeditation and treachery, and was sentenced to death. According to the facts, Alvaro killed his boss, Kino Ferrer, owner of Ferrer Junk Shop, by hitting him with a piece of wood and then sawing off his limbs with a carpenter's saw."

"Ferrer Junk Shop shares its building with Evermore Corp. where prosecution witness Ocampo is employed as a security guard. Then uh... Ocampo further said that on the day of the crime, he both saw the accused and the victim enter the premises of Ferrer Junk Shop at around 9:00 AM... sorry, 9:05 AM po pala." Shit, I keep stuttering. "Then at around 10:00 AM, he heard some loud noises from Ferrer Junk Shopbut he did not pay attention thinking it was just the sound from the machines... he was, however, uhmm... he was interrupted when the accused looked through one of the holes and calmly told him that the accused haskilled his employer and needed help in disposing the body."

"Ocampo immediately called the police... and when Alvaro was asked why he did it, he said Kino Ferrer had been mistreating him and his coworkers, and that he has been an abusive employer ever since, and he expressed no regret for his actions."

"Tell me the issues." Atty. ordered.

"Uh... it is whether or not the prosecution's evidence is sufficient to prove the accused's guilt beyond reasonable doubt." I answered. Dito na mas bumilis ang tibok ng puso ko dahil karaniwan dito na papasok ang legal basis of the court ruling. Hindi pa ako masyadong confident pagdating doon.

"Was it sufficient?" He asked.

"Uhm.. yes po, sir." I answered.

"How?" He asked again, and for a deadly second, my mind stopped functioning. Palihim kong kinurot ang sarili ko para magising. Napatingin ako kay Neo. He stared and gestured as if he's encouraging me to continue proving my point.
