With a Flick of My Tail : The Secret of the Mer-sisters Book One

Chapter 1

I'm standing in a meadow surrounded by woods on all sides. The sun shines down, heating my face. The breeze blows making my hair flutter around my shoulders. Taking a deep breath, I close my eyes and concentrate on the smells and sounds around me. Birds are chirping. The daffodils and daisies have a sweet aroma to them. I opened my eyes and spun around quickly at the sound of a twig snapping in the woods. I carefully scanned the area where the noise came from. I must not have noticed, but it was already dark out. Suddenly, a pair of red eyes peered at me through the darkness. My breathing became faster, almost shallow. I could feel my heart beating in my chest. To say I was scared is the least one could say. I was terrified. I had never felt this scared in my life. Another twig snapped. Something or someone was coming to get me.  silently prayed that it would leave me alone. Finally, the 'thing' stopped stalking and full out came running at me. Several different creatures were going through my mind. Bear? No, it wouldn't be this quiet. Cougar? Maybe. Wolf? No, there hasn't been a wolf sighting in Silver Springs, Florida in over thirty years. I wonder, though.....

Beep Beep Beep Beep!

"Uggggggghhhhh", I groaned as I cracked one eyelid open. "I can't stand school." My mom slowly peeked her head around the corner of my door.

"Seraphina, sweetie," she cooed, " It's time to get up for school." Ugggh... I am not a mornings person - never was and never will.

"Mom," I grumbled," when are you going to learn that I do not like it when you coo at me like that or, by the way, when you use my full name." She just stood there, apparently waiting for me to get up. "Mom! Could you go please?" She walked out of the room. "Thank you!" I called after her.

"Just make sure to be ready in time!"

"Ok!" I jumped out of the bed and ran over to my closet. Today is my sixteenth birthday, so I want to dress nicely. Well, it's Emerald and my sixteenth birthday today. So, technically it's our sweet sixteen! It is going to be great! It's just going to be my best friend Emerald, me, Kai, and Zayn, possibly. I texted my friend Emerald and told her that I am getting ready and will be leaving soon.

'Hey Em! :)'

'Oh hey! :D'

'What's up?'

'Nothing much. You?'

'Same. Ok well hey I'm getting ready and if you want a ride to school let me know and we'll go pick you up. K?'

'kk. My mom said yeah so let me know when you're coming.'

'Gotcha. Oh and I may go to the beach after school so bring your beach stuff.'

'K'

I went to my closet and picked out a pair of skinny jeans and a light blue tank top with sparkles on it. I went to the bathroom, got ready, and told my mom that I am ready to go. I also grabbed my beach bag that I packed the night before.

'Hey we're on our way out the door just as soon as I get something to eat.'

'K I'll be waiting. >:D'

‘omg. That smiley lol’

‘What? I like it. Ha ha’

‘nvm just let me go eat’

‘ok lol’

I ran down the stairs and got my blue flip flops onto my feet. "Hey, mom.... Umm... Is it all right if Em and I go to the beach after school today?" I asked my mom. The beach is only right down the road. We have a dock in our backyard, but it's not really a beach.

"Yeah sure. Your breakfast is ready.", she said as she set a plate of delicious food on the countertop overhang.

"Ok. Good. Oh. Also, Em needs a lift to school, too, today."

"Ok. That's fine. Make sure you tell her to be ready.”

"K. I will." With that said, I sat down to my breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast. I ate quickly and grabbed a couple of beach towels, some sunscreen, and my backpack and headed out the door. I lugged my bag and beach stuff and crammed it in the car trunk. We drove the five minutes to Emerald's house and saw her standing on the front porch. She ran over to my car and stuck her bag and beach stuff in between the seats, sat down, and buckled up. Little did I know that this day was going to hold a lot of surprises.
