At the palace.

Mew, the emperor, was signing documents for external affairs. There were sightings that the wall of their Kingdom were getting bombed by unknown creatures. He doesn't know if its done by humans or the people from the Demon Kingdom. But one thing he knows, they want to infiltrate their Kingdom to stop their plan of revolt.

A single knock on the door made him halt from signing the documents, he told the person on the other side of the door to come in.

It was Lady Lily who entered.

"Y-Your highness, I heard you haven't been eating since yesterday...I asked my new lady in waiting to prepare for you lunch, she'll be there in a minute."

Lily says with head down, Mew gazes at her and remembers something.

"Are you doing fine? How was your neck injury?" the woman's face lit up with his caring question. Still with her head down, she responded.

"I'm recovering well, your highness, thank you for your concern."

"I'm glad to hear that, I'm also sorry about your former lady in waiting, Lady Nara."

Lady Lily's expression changed in an instant, she went on her knees and bowed even lower.

"Y-Your highness! Please don't apologize! I am ashamed of what my lady in waiting did behind my back. Yes, I was jealous of the deceased empress but never did I think of harming her, your highness, please believe me." It was true, even though she was wary and despised Kana when he was still a sacrifice, it never crossed her mind to hurt her, particularly when she was crowned as the new empress.

"Then why are you with the high priest during the announcement of the prophecy? Weren't you with him that day?"

The woman recalled that day too, she was following the high priest because of one reason.

"It was my father's order. He told me to follow the high priest to gather information about the identity of the sacred fruit. Maybe that's why Lady Nara went too far and harmed the Empress before. But trust me, I wasn't part of it! The only person I met when I was recovering was only you your highness!. M-My maids can attest to that or you can use the magic lie detector on us too to prove my innocence." she desperately beg.

"Alright, no need to go that far and you can stand up now."

Lady Lily slowly sat up and stood. She still couldn't look at the Emperor's eyes.

"W-What about you your highness, are you alright? You must be shocked to hear that the empress died..."

Mew chuckled secretly and continued signing the documents on his table.

"Don't mind me. I already accepted the fact I'm a widower now. You don't have to feel bad."

"T-Then, your highness. Will the selection of the new Empress continue?"

"I suppose? He needs a new partner."

He?

Lady Lily was left confused with his vague answer.

"What do you mean by that, your highness, aren't you the one finding the new Empress?"

Mew paused from signing and looked at the lady.

They locked eyes.

"Let me be frank to you Lady Lily, since by today or tomorrow, you'll know the truth, I'll give you a heads up. The emperor isn't me. My brother will ascend the throne after the revolt happens. So whether you will be picked as the new empress as you are hoping, you won't be getting married to me. I'm not dense and I am aware of your feelings. If you want to say this plan to your father, you may do so. It's not like they can stop us."
