They lead us to the basement. The clock tower was a part of the big castle compound as they lead us through tunnels. With each step, the sound of the parade faded away. I tried to keep my breath calm and touched the bracelet in reassurance. I had only hoped it worked all the time and not only once. I'd seen enough vampire movies and read enough gothic novels to know that sometimes it doesn't work and I would be annoyed if it worked against the one person it shouldn't be used on.
The entire time I made sure that there was a distance between Alice, Edward, and me. I didn't dare look at him. Sure, I had been screaming at him not to die about a minute ago, but I was still hurt. There were still the unsaid things between us.
I realized that this is what Jessica must have felt when she called my dad, but couldn't fully talk to me as friends for a long time.
We went past many doors until we finally arrived at big heavy wooden ones. At the door, a pale boy in a cloak greeted the two - no, three guards that had accompanied us. It felt a bit excessive, but I didn't dare say anything.
"Alec," one of the guards, Jane, had said. The boy could have easily been her twin.
"They sent you to get one vampire but you got two...and a half," Alec looked at me. "Astounding. Edward, you seem to be in a better mood."
"A lot," Edward agreed in a flat voice. He had been whispering with Alice the entire time. I had gotten none of it. I hoped that they at least had a plan on how to get us out of here.
"And this...is the cause of this?" he asked skeptically. "I assumed she would cling on to you in a place like this."
you're not the only monster I've met, was what I wished I had said. And I had other issues: Edward's eyes were black. I had no idea what my being next to him in close proximity, let alone with the norigae bracelet, would even do.
"Dibs," Felix called from behind.
Edward turned around furious, but Alice stopped him with a warning look. Felix had been ready to fight him, a gloved hand doing a come hither.
"Let's not keep Aro waiting," Jane interrupted. "These are guests, be kind Felix."
The Volturi's room felt like it was at some point a prayer room. It was circular, the guards standing along the radius as though their only purpose was to stand there for eons. I assumed that the Volturi did more things than sit for decades on end. There was a low murmur in the air, the sound of vampires who had no reason to raise their voices past a certain pitch. Light streamed through the room, making it seem like their skins were bedazzled with Swarovski crystals.
A man with jet-black hair approached us. I wondered if his feet were even touching the floor as his feet, hidden by his long cloak, made it seem as though he was floating. I had to fight my urge to run.
"Jane, agaeptos, you've returned!" he exclaimed. "Oh, and you've brought dear Edward back."
There was something dangerous about this man. I didn't know if he was a renaissance painter or someone made up of onionskin. I had a sudden urge to press my finger to his face to see if the surface of his skin would break upon contact or if it was smooth like Alice's face. His eyes were red, as was everyone in the guard, but it looked milky. I had no idea if it was from old age or from not seeing life outside of the castle.
"He's alive," Jane smiled and repeated. "He's alive."
He turned his eyes towards us and became ecstatic. Everything in my body told me that I needed to get away, but I was locked in place. This was prey who had found his victim.
"Along with Alice and Bella!" he clapped excitedly. "Wonderful!"
He acted as though we were old friends coming by for a visit. He talked to Felix and told him to get his brothers. The other two Volturis pulled into the room, their auras oozing the same ancientness. One of them looked highly disinterested, the one with the white-blond hair glared at us.
