Empty Chairs At Empty Tables

My limbs were on fire, I felt that as much. The crescent-shaped scar on my arm was the only area that bore no pain. I was only vaguely aware of what was going on, the metallic taste in my mouth, the sharp pain in my neck. I could only hear the muffled sounds in the darkness. I had wished for once that my dreams would come and save me, but at last, nothing happened. I was vaguely aware of someone feeding me food and water, before falling into darkness again. I heard an argument, and then nothing again.

When I came to, the walls were white. I blinked but didn't dare move. The noise was too much for me and the smell burnt my nose. So this was it. This was how I became a vampire.

I was vaguely aware of the tube under my nose, blasting air into my nostrils, and the IV drip.

Would that be possible if I was a vampire? I was alarmed. Clearly, I wasn't thinking about things properly. I didn't know what was going on.

I only knew that it smelt like the hospital and I was not too fond of the hospital.

I pressed the red button for the nurse.

The nurse in her blue scrubs came in, putting on a smile for me.

"Isabella! You're awake."

"Why am I here?" I asked carefully. I only remembered arriving at the Kim's house, that was it. I wasn't going to ruin any alibi they had set up for me.

"You fainted while hiking," the nurse informed me. "Especially during a storm - you were cooled a bit when you got here, but nothing that we couldn't fix."
"And why do I feel like I got run over by a bus?"

"Because you've been in and out of sleep for two days. I don't think you'd remember it much though."

"Two?" I exclaimed. "It's Tuesday?"

The nurse nodded. "Your friends have been here - they left you these flowers. Also, Dr. Kim's boy hasn't left your side during visiting hours. He's such a good kid," she sighed. "Your dad has been here too but... he isn't amused," she warned.

I groaned. "I gathered that."

I looked at the clock on the wall. It read 9 am in the morning. They would all be at school right now.

"I'll get Dr. Cullen in," the nurse said. "And once he clears you, you are good to go."

The nurse helped me up in my hospital bed gingerly before leaving. I looked at my naked legs. There was no sign of a bite anywhere. If anything, there was a throbbing in my head from two days of rest and immobility. I wanted to go outside to the fresh air.

Carlisle walked in and I saw a flash of relief cross his face. The nurse left us alone after adjusting some things.

"You gave us quite the scare there," Carlisle said. "I have never met someone who has twice avoided becoming a vampire after being bitten."

"I guess I'm lucky," I croaked. I tried to smile, but somehow it hurt. "What happened?"

"Well, I was wondering if you could tell me that, properly. I know Edward's side, but he isn't the most reliable."

"I think, I found something that would hurt vampires," I told him about the brown rice tea and how Victoria had acted like it was hurting her. Carlisle, who had been the son of a clergyman, nodded.

"Well, no one I know has ever ingested holy water and we've never lived in Asia, so we've never really tried it out. I knew that we weren't that invincible."

"I don't know anything more than that. I passed out."

Carlisle made me follow his finger to check for a concussion. "Well, you got to the Kim's house and they managed to get the venom out of your system... and all of your blood. I was informed that you should probably not die unless you want to become a vampire."
