trigger warning for potential suicidal tendencies

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emily welcomed me into the house first thing on Sunday morning while my dad and Harry Clearwater went fishing.

"Don't worry about Jacob, Bella," Emily had heard from Sam what Jacob had found out. "Our protection won't wane just because someone had a crush on you."

"Would that still make me a vampire girl?" I questioned.

"You're still haunted by one," Emily joked. "But if you don't want me to call you that or any of us for that matter, just say so."

"Is it that easy?"

"No, but at least they won't say it to your face."

I wondered how Emily felt. I hated how I would look at her scars and pity her, that the man that she loved had done it to her.

I traced the scar on my arm. It felt like a parallel to hers, made from the same violent act.

"You're staring again," Emily said in a sing-songy voice. "That tells me you have something on your mind."

"When did you figure that out?"

"Around the time I realized that the scar on your arm is a vampire bite. What's wrong?"

I grimaced. "Do you ever wish you'd never found out that Sam was a shapeshifter?"

"How can I not know something this big about him?" Emily said. "Besides, it wasn't the perfect beginning, but we made it work."

"How?"

Before I could get an answer, Sam walked in. I saved the conversation for another day as he told me the current state of things.

"Is escaping a gift because she seems to be able to get out of our grasps a lot," Sam wondered. "She hasn't gotten anywhere near Forks but... I think I know why."

He told me about stenches.

"You see, she's following your trail. We can catch your scent," Sam cringed at that word. "It's not as strong for us as it is for vampires, but I feel like your smell has changed a bit. A little bit masked... by ours."

"So my being here is actually helping?"

Sam nodded. "It's normal again when you go back home and shower, of course. You can only do so much about your natural scent. But if your trail disappears and gets masked, it's harder for her to find you."

"But she must know where I live at this point."

Sam shook his head. "I don't think so, Bella."

"Enough talk about this," Emily shook her head. She hated that I was being hunted and placed the three-sisters squash in front of us. "Let the girl enjoy her break!"

I had never gotten a moment with Sam until now but as we sat there; I felt the need to tell him something that had been on my mind for ages.

"Sam, I've never thanked you for finding me."

"I was just doing my job, but it was the least I could do," Sam gave me a soft smile. "I wasn't supposed to be on their land in the first place, but then I heard you screaming after him in the woods and... I couldn't just let you there."

"Their land," I repeated it. "So the treaty is still a thing?

Sam was about to say something when Jacob walked in. I wish I could have ignored him then and there, but I had been facing the door because I didn't like to be snuck up on. It happened often with the pack where they'd come from behind to snatch up whatever food was on the table. My heart would race each time and I'd need half an hour to even calm down.
