Gumiho

We were in the parking lot when Jungkook caught up to us.

"We're going to eat at my cousin's restaurant," he was out of breath from running. "Me, my parents, and the team  - food is on us. Do you want to join?"

Angela looked at me excitedly. "Can we, Bella? I know it's a long way back home."

I thought about what I had to do this weekend, but stopped the thought. I should go out and enjoy myself, maybe not thinking about Jacob would help me wonder what was going on. He was no longer sick, that I knew.

I smiled.

"Show us the way!"

We followed the school bus to a restaurant in the heart of the city, but it was closed off for a private party - our party, I assumed. Inside it was warm from the grills and the smell of meat tickled my tastebuds. I wasn't a big fan of meat, but from the way they were marinated, I was going to make an exception to my "well-balanced meal" rule.

We sat at the table with Jungkook's family. Jin greeted a young-looking boy who looked surprisingly a lot like Jungkook from afar, but on closer look, I could tell that they were extremely different. The man had one hooded lid and looked like he could be an artist or a model. It seemed like good looks run in the family.

But when he walked, alarm bells went off in my head. There was something otherworldly about it like he was getting ready to ponce on prey. It was similar to Jungkook's, I noted. But this man?

His skin was like porcelain. Not the color - it was a smooth, honey beige tone that was tanned by the sun. There was a mole in small spots of his face, but that was it. When he moved his face, there weren't any lines. I could attest it to him being young, but it was uncanny.

"Don't feel off-put by him," Namjoon next to me said. "Taehyung's very eccentric."

I learned very quickly upon arrival that Jungkook had two dads. I felt like punching myself for not realizing it sooner - Jungkook would often talk about his dad and his appa like they were two different people. Throughout dinner, I watched as Jin sent looks of love Namjoon's way even when he was making sure everyone had enough to drink and eat. Hoseok, who ran the restaurant, sat at our table as well. I felt very much out of place. Angela at least looked like she could belong to the family unit, but I was the odd one out. Looking at Namjoon and Jin made it worse. My parents were divorced, so I never had someone doting over me the way the two did with Jungkook. I never really connected with Phil, but he made my mother happy. I wondered if that was the reason Charlie didn't speak with Namjoon and Jin. I hoped it wasn't.

"So," Taehyung pulled out the sentence. I noted how he didn't eat anything. "You're the person that Jungkook has been spending time with?"

I cleared my throat, "not a lot."

"Not a lot? He doesn't do much outside of swimming, so you're practically his definition of a lot," Taehyung stretched. "That's good for him."

"yah," Namjoon frowned. "No yawning at the table."

"I wasn't yawning," he hummed. "I was just making sure that I stay awake. Jimin-ie is coming home today. He's a ballerina and travels around."

"Is he the one who owns a ballet school?" I remembered the small comment that Jungkook let out.

"No, that's Hoseok over there," Taehyung nodded in the restaurant owner's direction. "This place is only opened on the weekend. Either than that, it's the atelier and the school."

Angela pipped up. "Aha, I knew it! You're the owner of the gallery!"

"The gallery?" Taehyung chuckled. "I own a lot of them. But yes, I am the owner. I bought those student paintings from Fork's Art club."

A restaurant in Port Angeles and Seattle, someone who is a ballerina. It seems like Jungkook's family was well-spread. I looked around and realized that Jungkook was nowhere to be found.

"He's probably in the kitchen," Taehyung answered my thoughts. "He's not a fan of big parties. Go on, no one will stop you."

I excused myself from the table and into the kitchen. When I asked the staff, they all pointed to the door that led outside. A metallic taste entered my mouth as I noticed a small smear trail of blood leading to the outside.

It's nothing, my chest pounded against my chest. The specialty of this restaurant is oxblood soup.

But as I stepped outside and heard the sound of something being torn apart, I had to stop myself from screaming.

Jungkook's front shirt was smeared with blood. The bright light of the kitchen illuminated his face which actually had the gall to look guilty. He was eating something raw. Was it...a liver?

He hid the bloody piece of his meat behind his back.

"I'm sorry."

I was to leave right at that instant but was too petrified to move. His nails were long - had they always been long or had I just not seen it?

"To be fair," he continued. "Your last boyfriend was a vampire. This shouldn't be much of a shock."

I snapped out of it, looking behind my back. He wouldn't kill me when everyone would be on the lookout, would he?

"No, I won't kill you."

"Can you read minds?"

"Your face says everything. No, I won't kill you."

"How do you know about Edward?" I demanded. Jungkook raised an eyebrow.

"They are the worst actors of all time. We all thought they were weird."

"One question."

"Go."

"Are you one too?"

"No," he shook his head. "Absolutely not. I'm way cooler."

"What are you?"

"A gumiho."

I felt hysteria rise in my throat. "Am I supposed to know what that is?"

"A fox spirit," he explained. "And well, you caught me doing something I shouldn't be doing."

Taehyung laughed. I jumped - when did he get behind me? He must have known.

"Googie here is supposed to be on a diet so that he won't be a fox spirit anymore. All you had to do was go vegan, bro."

Jungkook looked annoyed, "I'm stressed."

"Whatever floats your boat. I won't tell Jin," Taehyung shrugged. "It's your life. You've just reset it by thousand days."

"How about you?" I turned to Taehyung. Everything about him screamed supernatural. "Are you one too?"

"Oh no, I'm a vampire through and through," he assured. "But not your kind of vampires. They're  Italian."

I was confused. "There are... more than one type of vampire?"

Taehyung looked behind his back. "I fear that's a conversation you two should be having when Namjoon is not actively looking for Kookie. Clean up after yourself, for goodness sake. I'll give Bella something to drink so that she doesn't freak out more."

Taehyung's hand was cold when it touched my back to lead me away from the crime scene. I felt tense as I walked through the kitchen. I felt Jungkook's gaze follow. None of the kitchen staff looked our way - did they know?

When I got back to the table Angela was finishing up her japchae.

"Should we head home?" Angela asked. "It's getting late."

Angela drove back. There were so many thoughts going through my mind. I shouldn't have assumed that there were only vampires out there. Of course, if one existed then so should the other. How many monsters that I heard of were real?

At that moment I wished I could look it up properly. I knew that there was more than one myth of vampires out there, I read it in the book that I had bought when I was suspicious. But why were there different ones?

It was a question for a different day. I just hoped no one showed up in my room at night to explain.
