Only to be interrupted by the sound of Charlie and Billy coming through the door.
And Jacob.
I was truly ready to scream. It was only my respect for my pride that I didn't drag Jungkook up the stairs for some alone time.
Jungkook let go of my hand.
"Hi, Charlie! We made garlic bread."
I saw Jacob tense at the sight of Jungkook and me. I realized that he had never really been in the same room as Jungkook and me since that day at the hospital, back when we weren't dating.
"Oh, sounds lovely! Is that lasagna?" Charlie walked into the kitchen and looked impressed. "You know, I should just keep the two of you around if you keep cooking me a storm like this. Chief's orders."
"I'm a Korean citizen as much as I am an American citizen, Chief. You can't keep me here against my will," Jungkook joked. "Is everyone eating?"
"No, I'm just driving through," Jacob said sternly. "Bella, may I talk to you for a second? Outside."
I pursed my lips and walked outside of the house, closing the door behind me so that Charlie wouldn't hear anything.
"What is this about?"
"So, you're alive."
I frowned. "Yeah, I am."
"And you're not a vampire?"
"I think you could smell if I was," I held out my hand. "No vampire would be idiotic enough to burn themselves at the oven like this."
"Just needed to check for myself," he crossed his arms. "So... are you dating Edward again?"
"What?"
"You smell a little sweet, that's all."
"No, I am not," I stated. "I'm hanging around with Alice if that's why you need to know."
"And why did you disappear for a few days?"
"Is this an interrogation, Jacob?" I started to get annoyed. "I went to see my mom. I needed some clarity."
"Are you really leaving town?"
"Not so soon, but yes," Jacob clenched his fists but then I saw his frame relax. I hoped that didn't mean that my "not so soon" was more room for him to try for my hand or whatever idea he had.
"Jacob, do me a favor," I started. "Stop fighting for me. It's not going anywhere. The same goes for Edward. I'm not going to entertain your ideas. Get out of your imaginations, it's bad in there."
"I can't," he said.
"Why?"
"Because..." he trailed. "I think I imprinted on you."
I blinked. "I'm sorry?"
I was chalking this up to the same category as Edward's blood singer and mate.
"You think you did?" I elaborated. "Because thinking and one thing being are two different things, Jacob Black."
"It's a wolf thing."
"I don't want to hear about it," I held my hand up. "And frankly, I'd rather hear the story from anyone but you. I'll ask Sue instead."
He looked like he was ready to fight, but the moment I stepped back with my hands on the door handle, he stopped.
"I have someone who I love," I told him. "And I've been hurting him a lot ever since you and Edward have come into the mix. I don't want to waste the time I have with him. if anything was meant to be, Jacob Black, we'll see each other years down the line. But I want you to respect my distance."
"What happened to staying in Forks?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "A lot of things change when you leave high school. I have so much to think about, Jake. I thought I was going to stay, but then I realized that for me to stay I'd have to go away. You'll get it when you're older."
"I'm mature," he looked at me accusingly.
"For a 16-year-old, Jacob," I elaborated. "That's a very important thing to remember. Have a good day."
I walked back into the house and closed the door gently behind me. I went to the toilet to splash my face with water. I felt myself shaking.
"Bella?" Jungkook's voice was soft as he knocked on the door. "Are you alright?"
I opened the door, "I'm fine."
"Jacob was being Jacob again, huh?"
"Yeah," I let out a shaky laugh.
"The old men are watching ball," Jungkook said. "Want to get away? Watch the sunset or something."
"I think I just want garlic bread. It'll keep the vampires away."
Jungkook chuckled and dashed downstairs to grab a few and came back up. We went into my room and I closed the door behind me. As I munched on my food, I realized that Jungkook was mesmerized by something in my room.
It was the picture of us from prom, next to the other pictures that I had taken during our time together and before that. I had long forgotten about them, some of them having been taken when I was with Edward, but I never noticed how often Jungkook was lurking in the background. I remembered how he was also around when we were kids, just that I didn't pay much attention.
I never wanted that to happen anymore, even if I knew it was practically impossible.
"I thought about what you said last week," I started. "and how I said that I wanted to see how things are before... tell you how I feel. I think that time is here. I know we don't have much time and I don't know where we will go afterward, but you're good for me."
I took his hand into mine. "You...didn't introduce me to this whole world, but you gave me Ariadne's thread. You showed me how to get in and out of this whole mess with my mind intact - you and your family. And I realized that even though I am okay on my own, I like having you there.
"So if you'll have me, I'd like to spend a summer of my teenage years with you," my heart pounded against my chest. I was readying myself for rejection. I had no idea if he would say yes immediately, especially after how I had treated him.
But I felt his hand close around mine as he pulled them up to his lips. I felt the brush of his lips, the shiver that threatened to shake my body upon contact.
"It's going to smell if I kissed you right now, you know that right?" I felt his smile that was spreading.
"I don't care, Jeon."
"Your dad must be very distracted to not notice that the door is closed."
"Don't ruin this.""I'll shut up," he took my face into his hands and pressed his lips to mine. It felt electric, but it wasn't at all tame as he pulled my entire body into his. He accidentally backed himself into my table, knocking down some things.
"Bella!" Charlie yelled out. "Are you alright?"
I broke off the kiss and opened the door.
"I'm fine!"
Jungkook was giggling and I smacked his shoulder to make him stop.
"Are you sure?""yeah, no. Jungkook just dropped the English Anthology of Literature! Go back to watching baseball."
"Keep the door opened!" he called out.
"I will!"
I glared at Jungkook who, despite the flush to his face, looked a little bit too innocent for whatever trick I knew he was ready to pull.
After a few minutes, the chatter of Billy and Charlie being loud enough, I closed the door once more and locked it
"Honestly, you used to be a lot more tactful."
Jungkook swooped my legs from underneath me and threw me onto my bed gently.
"Trust the process, Bells," and he went in for another kiss. Only that this time, he made sure not to alarm the two poor men downstairs about the illicit activities that went on in my room.
