Charlie was still in his police uniform, and he had ended his call to Billy, a deep crease between his brows.
"Billy said you had a fight with Jacob."
"It wasn't much of a fight," my wet socks were in my hands, the most terrible feeling in the world. "I just...let him, I guess."
"Do I even want to know?"
"No," I shook my head. "You don't. Whatever Billy said, believe that."
"Billy said that I didn't know what was going on within my own house and that anything you may say about Sam Uley is wrong," he raised his eyebrow. "You never said a single thing about Sam Uley."
"Jacob was skeptical of him," I informed him. "But now they're friends. But Embry doesn't like him. I don't know, dad. It's a La Push problem." I didn't want to care about Jacob.
He seemed uneasy. "Alright, kid. Whatever you say."
I dreamt of the wolves that night, the ones that were following Laurent. Why did they go after Laurent? Why were they big?
The Quileute tribe are supposedly descendants of wolves, the conversation I had with Jacob on the beach nearly a year ago rang in my head.
I snapped back up and reached for the Native American folklore book I had bought to find out about the Cold Ones.
Wolves in the woods of Forks? Unlikely.
Mythical wolves in the woods of Forks that go after vampires, the supposed mortal enemies of the cold ones?
The probability was not zero when one of my neighbours was a fox spirit and his vampire dad. I called the Kim household.
Jin was the one who picked up at this hour of the night.
"Bella?" he seemed surprised. "It's a little bit late."
"Sorry, Mr. Kim – uh Seokjin, uhm I know this sounds weird, but I don't know if Jungkook told you that I know about, uh – "
"Yeah, he did," he seemed rather cheerful. "Is that what you want to talk about?"
"Have you heard about the woods?"
"Yes, I have. It's been putting a damper on my fishing trips, not that Namjoon minds. He doesn't see the appeal."
I could hear the undertone of concern in his voice. I knew he was the one who often tried to play things off, but if he had to be, he could be serious. An idea popped up in my head. Maybe he had the answer to my werewolf problem.
"Actually, I have a lot that I have to discuss but I don't think the phone is the right time."
"I would say you could come over, but it's 2 am and I think Chief Swan wouldn't want his daughter sneaking out at night into the house of a boy," he chided.
No, Charlie would not, but I was told I could come over for breakfast, and we would talk about it.
The Kim's kitchen was a comforting sight. While the house was modern, there was a certain warmness to the way the kitchen was built. The walls were a green tone, and it felt like it could have been the kitchen of a little witch in the middle of the forest, based on the number of fresh herbs they had. They even had a cauldron outside for when they wanted to cook a stew, but I didn't know how useful that was when the Kim family didn't have many people who ate food, especially if they had leftovers from the restaurants.
Jin gave me a tea that was supposedly good for my heart. I didn't question his centuries-old botany skills as I was sure he wouldn't poison me. The others in the house were still asleep.
