Race to Volterra

I felt like bursting out into a scream when Alice told me what happened. She had left the house, far away enough so that Jacob and I had privacy when she got a vision. Edward had gone to the Volturri asking them to kill him... because he thought that I was dead.

Rosalie had told him what had happened, that Alice had gone to Forks because she thought that maybe she could help Charlie with the arrangements.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid - he is not picking up!" Alice looked like she was going to go rabid. "What did you tell him?"

"That Charlie was arranging a funeral," Jacob said slowly.

"Oh my gosh," Alice facepalmed. "He made up his mind at that exact moment."

"Can't you call him? Explain things?" hysteria crept up my throat. "Explain everything?"

"I tried but it seems like he trashed his phone."

"But... why would he go?" I knew that he had said that he would technically kill himself if I died which was the most dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life.  "He left, he said I'm a fucking distraction to him."

Alice looked at me in shock. "I don't think he meant that the way you think he did. I don't - "

I barely heard what she was saying. A ringing sounded in my ears as I pinched the bridge of my nose. 

"What can we do?" I said as calmly as I could although my pulse was way too high.

"We have the same amount of time to get to Italy as he does to from Rio but he has two hours on us. So by the time we land in Italy, we will have to see if the Volturi say yes... but I don't think they will say yes. They love Carlisle too much."

"Okay," I nodded. "Then go and explain."

"But you need to come, Bella. He won't believe me and... I think you know what it's like to be suicidal. He won't listen to anyone else but you."

"First of all," I did not let the comment let slide. "Ouch. Secondly, I can't just leave without telling Charlie anything. I'll make something up."

"Okay, okay," Alice nodded. "I'll call the airlines."

"Wait!" Jacob pointed out. "What is this Volturi?"

"The Italian vampire mafia," I said dryly, quoting what Taehyung and Jungkook had said.

"Won't they kill you if you go there? Bella, you're human."

"He's right," Alice realized. "As much as I hate it... but what choice do we have?"

"I'll deal with it when I get there," I frowned. "I have some calls to make."

The first one was obviously for my dad. He had picked up on the first ring, asking me if something was wrong. I felt terrible for lying to him, but I didn't want him to worry.

"Hey, dad? I'm going to California with Alice," I told him. "She says the family wants to see me, even if Edward isn't there."

"Are you sure?" he sounded skeptical. "This isn't a ploy to secretly see him, right?"

"No," I said honestly. "I wouldn't go looking for him unless my life depended on it. Not anymore."

"Well, it will be good for you. California Spring break, but take care, okay? I don't want another incident."

"I will, Dad," I eyed Jacob who watched me on the phone. "And I promise I will be standing here on Monday morning for breakfast at the latest. Please take care of everyone, okay?"

"So that's how you lie," Jacob sneered. "It comes easy for you."

"It's half the truth, which makes it easier. Jacob, Charlie may never know what is going on. He's been through too much already."
