Crescent Scars

I lay in bed dreading the day. It wasn't bad: a few hours of work and school, then it's off to La Push. There was a certain drab pattern to how my days went that didn't sit well with me because for the first time in my life I was enjoying school, and then I'd have to go to the Black's house to "hang out" with Jacob, only that Jacob was busy hunting Victoria. I was no help to Billy nor Emily. Sometimes I'd help her with cooking and I'd watch the pack come in and devour the hard work but that's it.

What made me even madder was that I was constantly referred to as Jacob's girlfriend. It hadn't bothered me at first because I assumed it was just something to annoy Jacob until I realize that maybe they weren't kidding.

I had told him that he shouldn't waste his time on me, but it seems between the time I had started dating Jungkook and now I seem to have forgotten to mention that I was in a relationship.

Mike Newton frowned when he saw Jacob drive past the hiking store as I got to work.

"Are you two-timing or something or why is that Jacob kid following you around? Aren't you with Jeon?"

"Nope. I was just at the reservation."

Mike raised an eyebrow. "Alright, but don't think I won't snitch if needed."

I pretended that I would hit him with the magazine. If there was one thing I didn't appreciate, it was jokes about cheating.

During dinner, we walked around the perimeter of the Black's house. Emily and Sam had joined us for dessert, and if Charlie was skeptical about anything concerning Sam Uley or whatever gang mention I had made, it dissipated. He seemed content that I was going outside.

"You really need to go to sleep," everyone wasn't sleeping enough. Charlie, who was dealing with the Biers' case, and Victoria in the woods. There were the wolves who were working overtime so that she won't get close to Forks, and of course me.

"Are you sure you won't get sick?" I touched his forehead and found it sizzling hot.

"It's a wolf thing. I can't get sick anymore and I heal fast."

"Fast healing?"

"Yeah, wanna see?" he pulled a pocket knife out of his pants. It took me a second to realize he was going to deliberately inflict pain.

"No, no, put the knife away, Jake! I can imagine for myself," I cringed.

He chuckled. "It's a good thing since we can't necessarily go to a doctor with this temperature. I'm pretty sure humans would normally die if they go over 102 Fahrenheit."

"I guess not... is that why you think Embry might join soon?"

"That and his grandfather says he could fry an egg on his head. There's no real age where you turn into one it just builds up and boom, you're a part of the pack. Mine was when I came back from the movies with you - I was just so happy, but I was also... mad? That's what happened that night," he grimaced. "Dad said I looked weird and then boom, I turned into a wolf. I nearly tore off his face."

He looked haunted by the thought, and I quickly change the subject.

"Best thing?"

"The speed. I'm faster than a bloodsucker," he seemed happy at that thought. "Speaking of which...why did Cullen kill Victoria's mate?"

"James was hunting me because he thought of it as a game," I said. The car on my arm hurt. "You know last year? When I was in the hospital in Phoenix?"

He snapped in a breath. "That close?"

I rubbed the scar. "That's why I never told you how I got this one."

"Is that... a bite?" his eyes widened. "Wouldn't that mean -"
