Treaty

Why did the talks always have to take place in the woods where no one would find us?  Edward had to pull to the side of the road and we got out. I dreaded what all of this meant. It had been a day only and I had seen Jacob at the funeral, but we didn't talk.

I hesitated to go into the woods. The last time I had been with Edward in the woods, it hadn't gone well.

"He's here to talk," Edward said. "More or less."

"More or less?" I was hesitant to walk in. I knew we weren't far from home, why did Jacob have to do this in the middle of nowhere. I was going to call either way.
Jacob was lounging against a mossy tree, half-naked as the wolves usually are after they phased. He looked stoic, his arms crossed, emotionless. I remembered the last I had seen him a few days ago, how he had shown a moment of vulnerability.

None of that now.

"Bella," he greeted. He did not acknowledge Edward, who was standing a few feet away from me.

"Is there a reason as to why you have to stand pissed in the middle of the road when I was, either way, going to go home?"

"Really? Because your boyfriend is at home and doesn't know when you're coming back," he seemed to flinch a bit saying the sentence.

"I'm here as a spokesman for the pack," Jacob announced. He was looking at me, not at the person who was actually affected by the treaty. "And as a reminder."

"We won't go onto your lands," Edward promised. "If Victoria is there, she's all yours."

"Good. Fine. We'll be keeping an eye out on Bella, too, whether you like it or not. One more thing. I need to remind you - " he was still looking at me. "If anyone of you bites a human, it's off. Not kill, bite."

I furrowed my forehead. What was he even on about? I didn't plan on becoming a vampire just yet.

"That's... none of your business."
"None of my business? Bella -" he was trembling. "If you become one of them, I'll have to kill you."

"Careful," Edward sounded. I tensed up. It was exactly like in my hallucinations, just that he was actually there this time.

"You see what you're doing to her?" Jacob exclaimed. "Can't you see that she's afraid of you?"

"Guys -"

"It was better when you weren't here," Jacob continued. "Why did you all have to return to Forks?"

Edward came between Jacob and me, pushing me to the back. I stumbled backward as he had forced me a little bit too hard onto the floor.

I heard a ripping sound, the sound of clothing being pulled apart in a violent way. Where Jacob once stood, his body contorting beforehand, was a russet wolf. He tolled over Edward, snorting.

There was a moment of anger, then he whimpered. I stood back up, my heart pounding against my chest as I crawled between him and Edward.

"Hurt him and you hurt me," I said quickly. "Same for you Edward."

I was breathing heaving, the blood rushing in my ears.

It didn't occur to me that I had never seen Jacob change into his wolf form. I had never seen any of them change in all my time on La Push. I had only seen him in action. I was as much afraid as I should be, but their eyes were intelligent.

Jacob trodded away.

"He's angry," my hands ached from being pushed down. "Don't let that cloud your judgment."

"He's a lot more than angry about being a werewolf," Edward said dryly. "Do you really want to be one of us? If it meant that he hated you so much?"

"Can't I keep my options open? If you were me, would you not want to not have an entire city needing to protect you? Dying because of you? Feel pity or guilt because you can't protect yourself?" I raised my eyes.
