Three weeks later...

Just call him. Pick up the phone and call him.

You nervous but your thumb, the skin around your nail becoming numb. Why was this so difficult? You had known Tom for years, and now all of your insides turned to jelly when his name is mentioned. Why now? Why when you saw him with that woman you started to become protective?

Was it because for the first time, you absolutely detested a woman he's dated? Was it that he seemed desperate, going steady with a woman when you know full and well that he can, and deserves, so much more? Was that it, that you didn't want him to feel worthless and you wanted to make sure that he never had to lower his standards for anyone?

And yet, there you were, unable to even make a bloody call.

You shrieked and ducked for cover when your ringtone sounded, as if your phone was saying, "I haven't got all day, just make a move." The butterflies flurried as you saw the caller ID.

He had done it for you.

Taking a deep breath, you answer the phone, putting it on speaker because you had the urge to nervously fiddle with your hands.

"Hello?"

"Hi." You smiled. Oh, how you missed not just the sound of his voice, but the face from which it came: his smile, the way his cheeks and eyes creased as his teeth shone and radiated pure happiness.

"How are you?"

"Great, just nervous."

"And why is that?" There was a pause on the other end, as if he was getting his bearings together.

"I'm thinking about dating again."

Instantly, your heart sank. Once again, you had been too late, and once again you were just the hearer, not participant, of great stories.

"Oh really?" you respond, trying hard not to have your pain resonate.

"Yes, but I really need your help."

"Me? What can I do?"

"Well...I was thinking—since you're female—that maybe if we went to dinner, you can tell me what my date would be thinking? See how can I make a better impression?"

Fake date or not, anything to be with Tom again was a yes.

"Sure, I'd love to."

"Really?" he asks, with some hope in his voice.

"Yes. What day were you thinking? I can try to make it there as early as—"

"(Y/N), if you don't have any plans, I'm right outside your door."

 What?

You turn around and peek outside the living room window. Sure enough, there was his car, and there he was sitting in the driver's seat. He waves to you.

"How long have you been sitting there?" You hadn't even heard him come up.

"About five minutes. Can I come in?"

"Are you going to be picking up your date from her house?"

"Possibly."

"Then you will have to wait until I'm dressed. We would have already agreed on a time."

Thirty minutes later, you were all set. Well, almost. You were still looking in the mirror, mentally preparing yourself for the night.

Okay, it's just a fake date. Do not let your emotions get in the way. You are not going to sabotage him. This is for his happiness, not yours. Just pretend it's a date for you, and it'll be all for the best. And don't screw up, be the woman he deserves.
