Tom's POV
I heard the truck tires come into the road. Looking up from my script, from the living room I see how she drives slowly to a park. The radio isn't blasting. She isn't smiling or even looking at me.
My heart sinks. In preparation for our wedding in 5 months, as a precaution we both had scheduled doctor's appointments to check for STDs. I came up clean. This somberness could only mean one thing.
She walks onto the porch, and to my surprise, instead of walking in, she rings the bell. And with it, my heart shatters. It must be that bad.
As I open the door, I try my best to give a convincing smile, but I can't. We both know that this wasn't the time. I take her by the hands and lead her to the couch to sit. She waits there as I make some tea and bring it to her.
"Give it to me straight," I say. "What did they say?"
"I don't have an STD, Tom." I tilt my head, confused.
"Well isn't that good?" She looks up at me. She had been silently crying, her face wet and her eyes red and puffy.
"I have cancer."

The news hit me like a truck. I froze, paralyzed in my own thoughts as tears fell down my cheek.
"He didn't say I have long, but then again, who knows? I could last longer, right?"
"How long did he say?" I ask in a whisper, once I collect myself. She shakes her head.
"It doesn't matter now, okay?" I take her face into my hands and rest my forehead against hers.
"Okay, darling. Okay." She sighs against me.
"What do we do now?" I take a moment before answering.
"What have you always wanted to do?"
~
We spend the next month going through her bucket list, from the big things—traveling the world with many road-trips, going to Disney Paris, seeing the opera—to the little things—trying shawarma, having a bonfire, go camping with friends. Currently, we were at the end of the list while completing another item: watching the sunset with a loved one. She was resting her head against me as we watched from my back porch.
"Everything okay, love?"
"I'm just so tired." I kiss her forehead.
"Of course you have. We've been so busy." She gives me a weak smile. I look at the list in her hand. So many things were crossed off.
"Are we already at the end already?"
"Mhm."
"What's the last thing?" There was one thing that hadn't been crossed out in red pen. She reads it with a catch in her throat.
"Grow old with the love of my life." Now it's my turn to choke up. She looks up at me. I take her hand and kiss it before leaning for her lips.
"I promise," I whisper against her lips, "I'll make sure you do. Whether you live for another month or we're together for another hundred years, I'll never forget you and what we had. You'll always and will forever be in my heart."
~
Later that week, we went out to dinner where we had our first date. I kissed her goodbye as we left the restaurant.
"Call me when you get home, okay?"
"Okay." We shared a final kiss.
"I love you, Tom."
"I love you too, (Y/N)."
I never got that call. She never made it to her house; she was only a few feet short of her driveway.
