"Here he is!" Topper announces my arrival as soon as I walk through my own front door. I find Topper, Kelce, Sarah and some of our other friends scattered around the kitchen all looking in my direction.

"What are you all doing here?" I scan through everybody but they can't give me a good enough answer to why they're in my fucking house when I wasn't even here.

"What the fuck was that out there today man?" Topper blurts out, his voice rowdy. He's drunk.

I roll my eyes knowing exactly what he's referring to. The outdoor movie when I put Brady in his place after he elbowed Ness in the face. "What you talking about man?"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about. Acting like Vanessa's fucking night in shining armour. She was the one that got in the way! Sticking her nose into business that wasn't fucking hers!" His voice getting louder and his tone getting more sarky by the second. I'm ready to put my fist through my best friends face if he keeps talking to me the way and especially if he keeps talking about Nessa like this.

"Listen to yourself Top! Fucking hell man! I stuck up for her which should have been your fucking job! Do you seriously not give a shit about your little sister at all? If he did that to Sarah I tell you now he wouldn't have got away as light as he fucking did. The only reason I didn't punch him in the face is because your sister asked me not to. I don't give a shit if he's my mate or not, you'd react the same way if Kelce purposefully put his elbow in Sarahs face! And incase you forgot, the kid had one of her best friends in a chokehold so technically it was her business!"

"Sarah's different! She's my girlfriend!" He yells before standing directly in front of me.

"Vanessa's your fucking sister!" I can't help but yell back before standing up to him, our height difference becoming obvious.

"Sounds to me like you're obsessed with her." He pulls a disgusted face at the thought of me and his sister, shaking his head at me.

"I'm not interested in your sister." I tell him confidently but deep down I'm screaming at myself for lying. "but someones got to look out for her when her own brother doesn't fucking bother." Topper has nothing left to say. He is about to turn back to our friends and keep drinking. "Now get the fuck out my house, all of you." They all turn to me confused if I'm being serious. "Now!" I yell and they all scatter rapidly clearing my kitchen. Kelce and I shake hands before he tells me he'll see me tomorrow.

Topper looks to Sarah expecting her to have his back and tell me her boyfriend is staying the night. But she doesn't. "You should go Topper. I'll see you tomorrow when you're sober." She tells him calmly pushing him to the door. He stumbles and she grabs him helping him regain his balance. At this point I know he's not going to remember this tomorrow.

I grab a glass of water when I hear the front door close and I have never been so content with silence.

Sarah walks back into the kitchen.

She hops onto the stool and stares over at me. A small smile tugging at her lips.

"What?" Confusion takes over my face.

"Nothing. I just think what you did for V was really sweet."

"No one else was gonna bother." I shrug off her compliment like it was no big deal.

"You like her don't you."

I snap my head to look at my little sister after hearing her sudden accusation. "What, no!" I deny adamantly.

"You can deny it all you want Rafe, but I've never seen two people look at each other the way you two do." She grins at me before disappearing out of the kitchen and I hear her walk up the stairs.

I'll prove to everyone I. Don't. Like. Nessa!

Vanessa's POV:

I traipse through to the kitchen, full ready, where my mom is already perched on her favourite stool at the breakfast bar and Topper is stood against the kitchen counter eating a bowl of cereal. "What the hell happened to your eye sweetie!" Mom nearly falls out of her seat when she sees my black eye which is extremely tender this morning.

Topper chuckles under his breath when he sees my black eye.

"One of Topper's friends elbowed me in the eye." I tell her honestly and Topper gives me an evil stare.

"On purpose?"

"Yes and no." I hesitate with my answer confused on which is correct. I explain the story to her and how Rafe stuck up for me and as soon as I mention him her face is beaming with pride.

"Aw Rafe is such a sweetheart isn't he!" She smiles as she is likely imagining him rescuing me from a burning building. "Did you stick up for your little sister too, Top?" She turns to look at my brother who is looking back at her like a deer in headlights.

"Erm I-" He can barely squeak out a word.

"You did stick up for your little sister didn't you, Topper?" If mom doesn't get the answer she's hoping for she is about to go off at Topper for not being a good big brother especially now dad isn't around.

"He did." I blurt out before I even realise I've opened my mouth. "He put the kid in his place and made sure I was okay, didn't you Top?"

A flash of guilt appears on his face before he agrees and rushes out of the kitchen without another word.

"What's up with him?" Mom questions me confused.

"Probably just hungover." I shrug. "Anyways I'm going over to Sarahs, I'll see you later."

"See you later, honey."

I walk out of my house and up the road to the Cameron's household. I go through the iron gates and walk up the drive at the same time Rafe is leaving the house.
