"You sure you don't want me to come with you?" Rafe holds my hand in his stopping me from getting out his car.

"It's only JJ, I'll be fine Rafe." I assure him. "Thankyou for the lift. God knows what my brothers thinking."

He smirks. "Let him think what he wants." He slides his hand to the back of my neck pulling me closer as he leans down to meet my lips with his. The taste of his lips becoming something I crave. He pulls away and I let out a sigh of irritation. "Want me to wait for you?"

"No it's okay, I'm not entirely sure how this is gonna go so I'll text you when I'm on my way home." He nods. I hop out his car and he drives off, my eyes follow as he goes back towards figure 8.

"Was that Rafe?" The voice behind me causing me to jump out my skin. I spin round with my heart rate rocketing.

"God dammit JJ, you made me jump." I sigh in relief when my eyes land on JJ, alone.

"You didn't answer my question." His lips pursed shut and his eyes serious.

Realising I couldn't lie to him because he just saw Rafe for himself and it would blow up in my face if I did lie and the truth eventually came out. I'm trying to get my best friend back not drive him away completely. "Yes, that was Rafe."

"Vanessa, why was Rafe dropping you off?" Shit. He first named me. He's pissed.

"I was at the country club, he was just..."

"Do you have something you wanna tell me?" He interjects. I shuffle nervously under his stare. He remains rooted to the ground with his hands shoved away in his pockets.

Yes. "No." I swallow anxiously wondering if he can see through my lie. My eyes falter to the ground, counting the speckles on the pavement.

"Vanessa?" That was his way of asking me to look at him. I keep my eyes on the floor. "V?" His sudden use of my nickname causes me to look up. "Are you with Rafe?" He chokes out, his brows furrowed with betrayal as scrunches up his nose in disgust at the thought of me and Rafe together.

That was it. That's when I knew right there, I had to take the secret of me and Rafe to the grave if I wanted to keep the pogues in my life. I was not about to give them up; but I don't want to give Rafe up either. "No, god No JJ! Do you not know me at all!" I protest dramatically, realising I should tone it down a notch to make it more believable.

He raises a brow. "Sometimes I'm not so sure if I do." He might aswell have just squeezed the life out of me right there because I didn't want to live with the feeling of my heart chipping away persistently after everything he says.

"What are you saying JJ? Come on it's me, you know me! We've been best friends from the moment we met. Well, after I threw a pencil at your head for stealing my Nutella sandwich from my lunch box in kindergarten..." I noticed a small smile tug at his lips. "You remember? We both ended up crying and Miss Haze put us both on a time out." He let's a chuckle escape.

"Yeah I remember." He nods with a grin. "Even though I was hurt she still put me on a time out, she always had it out for me that bitch." We both chuckle.

"I'm grateful she did because it led to us being best friends." I admit.

Guilt flashes across his face when he looks at me. "I missed you." He blurts out, his expression still serious.

"I missed you."

We both give in and crash into each others arms, he's never hugged me so tightly. I feel
his chin resting on my head as I rest my cheek on his chest.

"I'm sorry." My voice muffled against him.

"I'm sorry too."

"Do they all hate me?" I ask pulling my head away so he can hear me.

He knew exactly who I meant. "No V, they don't hate you. They're just hurt."

"You know I didn't do it on purpose right?" I make it into a question looking for the reassurance.

"I know. Let's go inside and sit down."

JJ leads us both inside and we take a seat at our usual booth. Not having to worry about the kooks being in our spot felt good, knowing they're on their own turf at the country club.

"About the party. I swear to the high heavens, cross my heart and hope to die I had no part in it. My brother had a few friends round at our house and then my mom left the house and more and more people just kept showing up. Before I knew it I had hundreds of strangers rooting through my house and a very drunk brother who didn't give a shit." I try my best to explain, telling him the truth. "I asked him to tell the strangers to leave because I was so sure he didn't even know them himself but he wouldn't. Then I said I was gonna invite you guys but he wasn't having any of it and basically told me he would start. You know what he's like when he's drunk, he would've wanted John B's blood and you know it." He nodded in agreement. "I couldn't have them both smashing up the place so I had to have Sarah take him over to her house so I could chase everyone out. Please believe it wasn't all unicorns and rainbows for me because it wasn't! If I ever threw my own party at my house please know you'd be the first ones I'd invite."

"I believe you." He smiles, his singular dimple in his left cheek protruding. "Now let's go straighten this out with the others."
