Rafe drags me away from Luke breaking our kiss. "What the fuck are you doing Nessa!" He yells over the increasingly loud music sounding genuinely hurt.

"I fucking hate you and I mean it." I tell him close to his ear before spinning on my heel, grabbing Luke's arm and stalking off as far away from Rafe as I can get. I can't help but feel guilty for telling him that lie. Telling him I hate him; because I can't hate him. I should hate him after everything but I just can't. I don't know what come over him tonight but he was different. I can't keep walking on egg shells around him hoping and praying I'm gonna get the side of Rafe that I love when I mostly just get the side of Rafe that I tolerate.

Me and Luke find ourselves outside in the back yard and I now feel like I can finally breathe. I perch on a wall at the bottom of the garden, Luke sits beside me.

"Can I just ask what the hell that was?" He chuckles lightly telling me he took it well.

"I'm sorry for just kissing you like that Luke, I shouldn't have done that..."

He interrupts. "I'm not complaining, Vanessa. I'm actually pleased that you did kiss me."

"You are?" I stare up at him confused.

"I just had the hottest girl at this party make out with me and I didn't even have to make the first move." I blush at the fact he thinks I'm the hottest girl here. I feel appreciated. But I know that's not the truth. There's other girls here hotter than me, one of them will be lucky enough to be with Rafe. Where I want to be, but I can't because I'm not good enough and never will be good enough. I was so stupid to think.

"Thankyou for the compliment." I laugh. "You're not bad looking yourself." I stare down at my feet.

"Is there something between you and Rafe?" I snap my stare to look at him.

"Omg No! What makes you think that?" I protest awkwardly.

"Just that you're always together, whether that's arguing or laughing."

I scoff. "Very rarely laughing. But he's my brothers best friend and also my best friends brother and we all kind of grew up together so it's almost impossible to not interact with him which is why it's always arguing." I fake a laugh.

"Ah right, I see." Luke nods understandingly. "So there's definitely nothing between you two?"

I shake my head as much as I didn't want to. "Nope. Never has been, never will be." I assure him reluctantly.

"That's good to know." He smiles and I notice he has a gorgeous smile.

"Luke! Hey man!" Two strangers walk over to us. They bump fists with Luke and I stand awkwardly waiting for him to introduce me.

"Hey boys! This is my friend Vanessa! Vanessa, these are my friends Ryan and Josh."

"Hi it's so nice to meet you both!" I say kindly as I hug them both one after another.

"It's nice to finally meet you too Vanessa, we've heard a lot about you!" Josh grins at Luke who is nervously scratching the back of his neck. Exactly what Rafe does when he's nervous.

I can feel my cheeks heat up at the thought of Luke talking about me to his friends, saying all good things I hope. I can imagine Rafe would never mention me and if he did he would never say anything nice. "He does?"

"Are you kidding? You're all he's gone on about for the past three days!" Ryan exposes Luke and himself and Josh can't help but chuckle at their completed attempt at embarrassing their friend.

I don't know what to say. I remain silent feeling guilty that I said I didn't want to go out with Luke and he's not my type when all he's been doing is talking about me probably getting his hopes up.

That's when I notice Rafe walk by. His eyes stalking me.

"Can we get you a drink, Vanessa?" Josh politely offers.

Wanting nothing more than to ignore Rafe and get as far away from him as I can, I nod. "Yeah sure, me and Luke will come with you."

Luke puts his arm across my shoulders, like Rafe use to, as we follow his friends inside. I can't help but meet eyes with Rafe and he's already looking back. He looks empty, emotionless as he stands talking to people I've never seen before. That same brunette girl clinging to his arm. I mentally shake my head before breaking eye contact and heading inside.

We make our way to the kitchen island where Josh opens a cooler passing it over to me. I thank him kindly as he passes another to Luke.

"Vanessa! There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you!" I'm greeted by my very drunken best friend.

"Hey I wondered where you went!"

"Hello Luke!" She greets him. "Hello Lukes friends!" She greets them.

"This is Josh and Ryan, guys this is my best friend Sarah!"

"Nice to meet you Sarah!" They both greet her with a smile.

"Sarah, where did you go!" My brothers voice gets my attention I look over at him walking towards us followed by Kelce and Rafe of course.

"Yo Luke bro, you good!" My brother and Luke do a handshake. Kelce and Luke then do the same. Rafe looks away uninterested.

Luke introduces my brother and Kelce to his friends when Sarah drags me away from the boys.

"So what do you think about Luke?" She says in my ear over the music.

"Yeah he's nice." I shrug.

"So you don't like him." She assumes confidently.

"I didn't say that."

"I know you, V. Nice isn't for you."

"I guess you do know me." I chuckle. "He's so lovely and I should like him but I just want someone more..." I pause trying to think of the word.

"Rafe." She deadpans as if it's so obvious.

"No!" I protest.
