We ended up at mine and Toppers house, all of us in the kitchen. Topper had arranged for more of his friends to meet us here. So the group of five has now turned into atleast 15.
I'm sat at the breakfast bar with Sarah whilst the guys are all stood in a poorly formed circle on the other side of the breakfast bar.
I hear moms slippers slapping against the tiled floor and then she appears dressed up with her hair and makeup done.
"Hey everybody!" She gets excited at the sight of everyone in the kitchen getting ready to soak up some attention.
"Hey Mrs Parker." A few of Toppers friends say in unison.
"Boys, you can call me Jen! You know that!" She flutters her lashes as she walks into the centre of them. Her eyes land on Rafe who is stood directly opposite me and hasn't been able to tear his eyes away from mine since we got here.
I see the panic flash in his eyes as soon as he realises she's noticed him. "Rafe! Sweetie! It's so good to see you again!" She pulls him into a hug but he reluctantly hugs her back looking over her shoulder at me still. His eyes begging for help. "I hope you're looking after my Nessie!" She turns to look at me behind her and then back at Rafe. The conversations with Topper and his friends continue around them.
"Always Jen, you know that." He assures her.
She reaches up pinching his cheek. "I know I can count on you, Rafe." She beams. "Oh!" She blurts out as if she's suddenly remembered something. "That's what I was gonna ask you... why don't you and Nessie go to midsummers together?" The words fall from her lips gaining mine and my brothers attention.
"Mum!"
"Mum!"
We both yell in unison. Everyone falls quiet and the faint music plays in the background.
"What?" She looks between us both confused.
"Are you going somewhere?" I look down at her dressy outfit and back up at her face full of makeup.
"Me and the Cameron's are going to the country club. Are you coming?"
"No we've just been." Topper tells her, his tone laced with irritation.
"Okay well feel free to party a little. You kids are too uptight nowadays." She kicks off her slippers and slips on her boots. She clicks on over to me kissing my cheek and then does the same to Topper. "You know where the drinks are, everyone help yourselves. I won't be home till late. Call me if there's any problems." She tells us all before disappearing out the front door.
My head falls into my hands at the same time I groan.
"What you moaning for? Your moms nice." Sarah nudges me.
"She's a nightmare. Always knows how to embarrass me." I brush my hair out my face, looking straight ahead and meeting my eyes with Rafe's.
"She really likes my brother."
"Yeah she does."
The guys raise their voices as they get into a discussion and I hear my name. "I don't know why my mom said that. I wish she'd just listen when I tell her none of my friends like my sister, especially Rafe. It does my head in when she's shipping you both all the time." Topper whinges like a little girl to Rafe but his expression remains blank and he remains silent.
The doorbell rings and in walks even more kooks that are friends with my brother. I disappear into the basement grabbing to cans of cider and a beer for Sarah to give to Topper.
I spin around when I crash into someone. I look up to see Rafe. "Jesus Rafe, you scared me!" I hiss at him with a heavy breath. He chuckles at me jumping.
"Sorry baby, I just wanted to see you." He wraps a hand around my waist pulling me into him. Irritated I can't touch him with the cans in my hands.
"You saw me upstairs. You couldn't take your eyes off me." I tease him playfully.
"Can you blame me? You're fucking gorgeous." He pushes a strand of my hair behind my ear and strokes my cheek with his thumb.
"You're not too bad yourself." I look up at him through my lashes.
He looks down at the cans in my hand. "I hope that beer is for me." He smirks. I pass him the beer decide Topper can get his own.
Rafe dips his head pressing his lips softly against mine. Eager to deepen the kiss but both realising we're on a time crunch we pull away. "We should get back upstairs." I tell him walking ahead. He slaps my butt as I walk past before he follows.
Topper and his friends sound like they're in a heated discussion when we both return. Sarah looks bored until she notices us emerge from the basement together and then a Cheshire like grin creeps onto her face.
Rafe takes no notice of her and rejoins his friends but I hop back on my stool beside her. "Where did you disappear to?" She wiggles her eyebrows at me.
"Shutup and drink your drink." I slide her drink over to her and she cracks it open.
"Has he still not said anything about midsummers?" She asks quietly leaning close to my ear making sure no one can hear her.
"No he hasn't even said anything about us yet. I don't just want to assume we're together."
"I think it's fair to say you're dating."
"I mean I want that but I don't know if he does. Can we even call it that if we have to keep it a secret."
"It won't be a secret forever. Topper will eventually find out and he will just have to get over it."
Sarah's right. If Rafe and I do start dating we can't keep it a secret forever. My brother is gonna find out eventually whether he puts the pieces together himself or someone slips up. My stomach sinks as my mind imagines the scenario and how it will unfold. The argument which will go down. Is it all worth it?
Rafe is worth it.
I imagine a scenario where we are dating and everyone knows and everyone is okay with it. I could kiss him whenever, wherever. We could spend all our time together. Double dates would no longer suck. We could go to midsummers together. Then my mind shifts to the pogues.
Oh god.
How would the pogues react.
