Sarah pulls up her car into the Country club parking lot. I notice my brothers car across the way which tells us they're already here.
My heart starts racing, beating heavily against my chest at the thought of seeing Rafe. "Why am I nervous?"
"Because you like him, a lot." She answers me seriously, still gushing over the idea of me and Rafe. "Let's be honest, you have since we were little."
I can't deny it. I can't call my best friend a liar. She knows me better than anyone. I have always liked Rafe, the deep seeded feelings have never gone away, even after all his harsh encounters. He could run me over and shoot me in the foot and the feelings would still be there.
Our feet fall in sync as we walk through the lobby, greeting Michelle, the receptionist, on our way past.
Appearing outside; my eyes, as if they were magnetic, immediately fall on Rafe who is already looking in our direction. His mouth upturns into a smile at the sight of me. Memories of last night flash in my mind causing my cheeks to heat up slightly.
Rafe is stood with my brother... and kelce. "Great, Kelce is here." I whisper to Sarah through my teeth so they couldn't read my lips.
"It's fine I'll distract him." She says back to me exactly the same way.
We find ourselves approaching the golden trio. Topper and Sarah wrap their arms around each other, their lips smacking together before pulling apart, toppers arm remaining over her shoulder.
"Why don't you get us both a drink V? We'll go find us all some loungers whilst the suns out." Sarah nods towards the bar behind me.
"I'll go get us a drink. You both want a beer?" Rafe speaks all of a sudden which makes my stomach flip.
Kelce and Topper nod. "Actually I'll come with you two." Kelce starts to follow in mine and Rafe's direction.
"No!" Sarah shouts anxiously instantly realising how weird she seems and lowers her voice. "Me and Topper wanna know where you want to sit Kelce, seen as though you always complain. So come choose our seats!" She orders him and he nervously complies after her sudden outburst.
Rafe and I walk over to the bar, he spins a stool round gesturing for me to sit on it before perching on the one next to it.
The bartender immediately appears as if we summoned him. The creepy one from before but he doesn't even glance in my direction. "Three beers and two ciders." He tells him and he gets to work making our drinks.
"How was golf?" Unsure of what to say and desperately wanting to hear Rafe's voice, this is the best I come out with.
He turns to face me, his expression soft as he looks at me. "Wasn't worth leaving you this morning." He puts his hand on my thigh, stroking my tanned skin with his thumb . "I missed you."
I immediately blush at his words. My heart flipping with excitement. "You did?" I ask for reassurance.
"Are you kidding? All I can think about is last night. You're living in my head rent free." He tells me with a low husky voice leaning into me.
Last night flashes through my mind and Rafe's touch creates heat between my legs. Our eyes meet, the tension and desperation for each other was evident in the air.
Five drinks were suddenly clattered down in front of us causing us both to jump and break our gaze.
He stands up grabbing the three pints and without him having to ask I grab the ciders. We take a slow walk back to find our friends.
"We're not gonna tell my brother, right?" I blurt out anxiously. Even after Rafe and topper have been together all morning I know Rafe hasn't said anything otherwise I would be hearing from an incredibly angry brother.
"You don't want to?" He asks and I'm unable to read his expression.
"No I don't. You know exactly how he'll react, you saw him at the wreck the other day when he heard rumours so imagine if we told him it's true. "
"So you want to keep us a secret." He says rhetorically almost seeming disheartened.
"You don't want to keep this a secret?" My tone surprised as I look up at him.
"Well if my hands are on you I want everyone to know that their hands are never gonna get the chance." He winks with a smirk.
I shake my head with a small giggle. My heart beat quickening at the thought of jealous Rafe, he's hot.
"I just think it's best we keep it a secret for now. Nothing good will come from my brother finding out, it will all be my fault and then he'll probably make you choose..."
"I'd choose you." Rafe interrupts my rambling.
I can feel the butterflies frantically flapping around my stomach. "You would?"
He smiles softly at me. "In a heartbeat." I can feel my heart ready to burst. "What do you think my sister would say?"
"She knows."
He nods nonchalantly. "Is that what that was earlier with Kelce? She was trying to let us be alone? So she's cool?"
He reads people exceptionally well, just a shame it took him this long to read me and my obsession for him. "Yeah she got all excited when I told her, she started bringing up midsummers." The words fall out before I realise.
"She has always grilled me about you so maybe she always knew it would happen." He completely blanks midsummers which tells me everything I need to know. There's no chance of me and Rafe going together and it's obvious he doesn't want anything serious but in the process he doesn't want me to see anyone else.
It takes me a while to process his words as all I can think about is his obvious subject skipping. I see our friends coming up close and decide the conversation should end here. "Yeah I think Sarah has always known on my part." Is the last thing I say before we join back up with the others.
